Millers of Longton, Preston
Millers of Longton offers a Europe-wide breakdown and recovery service for commercial vehicles, with clients ranging from single truck owner/drivers to some of the biggest transport companies in the UK. It also offers related services such as body workshops, MOT facilities and HGV rental. Founder John Miller established the company more than 35 years ago from the back of his home, with the support of his wife, Janet. Turnover for the business was £14.9m.

Eric Kitchen launched his business in 1963 by driving to local car and commercial vehicle retailers to collect worn-out brake shoes and returning them, refurbished, the next day. The business grew and his family has continued his legacy. Today it operates branches in Lancaster, Barrow, Blackpool, Kendal and Penrith, stocking 300,000 items and operating a fleet of 85 delivery vans. The latest figures show turnover of £25.7m.

Smiths Hire stocks a range of plant, equipment and DIY tools available for hire across the North of England. An additional training division delivers a range of programmes relating to machinery use and health and safety. The Smith family enterprise began as a coal merchant more than 150 years ago and has been in the hire business for more than half a century. It employs 188 employees.

Cherish Holdings UK, Lytham St Annes
Cherish provides a range of care services across the North West, ranging from operating children’s homes to providing homecare, specialist care, supported living and end- of-life care. Group sales for the year ending June 2024 were up to £21.02m compared to £16.1m the previous year. It was boosted by overall growing demand and new homecare framework contract wins in Warrington and Blackburn with Darwen.
Engledene, Burnley
Engledene is the parent company of AMS Neve, the manufacturer of world-class audio equipment which has won two Oscars, a Grammy and an Emmy for its innovations, and which has been used in the production of many award-winning music tracks. The group also includes The Sutcliffe Tool Company, as well as Landmark Burnley. The latter converted the former Burnley Grammar School building into a business and events hub, which continues to expand and launch new services.
