Our recent achievements and plans for the future
Newtown Mill, a previously derelict building, has recently been converted into a dynamic mixed-use area that is now part of Burnley’s university campus. This building is a living artefact of the town’s cultural and architectural narrative. Its preservation was never about nostalgia alone – it was about creating a platform for economic growth, environmental responsibility, and civic pride.

It’s been a year of exceptional award success for Burnley College, including A Level Alumnus Eshan Bilal securing the Student Achievement Award at Education North and multiple students from Plumbing to Games Art winning their WorldSkills Heats. We’re currently welcoming in almost 1,000 future learners this week who are exploring what it’s like to be in the Burnley College Family.

Burnley Leisure & Culture (BLC) is an independent registered charity whose longstanding vision is for healthier happier communities. We are committed to improving health and wellbeing and we achieve this by providing high quality active wellbeing and cultural services. As a charitable trust we exist for public benefit and strive to lead, grow and inspire.
Our recent achievements and plans for the future
In 2024/25 we generated £7.9 million of charitable revenue to help support all our venues and community activities. 2025 has so far seen BLC have record breaking numbers of memberships of around 10,000 members. Our recent achievements were investing over £1.2m into St Peter’s & Padiham Leisure Centres on upgrades, and we will be opening a Jurassic Adventure Golf Course in 2025 at Prairie Sports Village.

I have worked at Burnley Leisure & Culture for the last 10 years and what makes Burnley stand out from the rest is simple, the community and can-do attitude. We should all be extremely proud of Burnley as a town, it’s truly made extra special by its residents, diverse communities, hardworking, friendly people who help each other. Burnley is further enhanced by the wonderful green spaces and parks we have, stunning countryside and an abundance of things to do. We are extremely fortunate for a town our size to have this wealth of activity, continued investment and opportunities.
