How important is collaboration and what opportunities are there for funding, innovation partnerships and export?
Paula G: The growth opportunity is obvious, when we’re talking about aerospace and defence and the contracts that are coming through. The civil sector is way behind and those orders are still flooding in so, from a perspective of growing your business, understanding what that sector need is means you can tailor your business.
Training and business development programmes will help you identify where your core skills are that will help you pivot into a new technology or product that you want to manufacture. We’re being asked to make things faster, cheaper and more accurately. We need to adopt technology in order to do that.
WG: It’s still trickier lower down the supply chain because you have a lot of smaller companies going for the same contract. There is a lot of not wanting to give too much of the game away.
However there is the NWAA, the defence Pat Garth
cluster, there are lots of groups that are helping with that communication.
It’s leaning to your
strengths and the opening of communication is providing confidence in a lot of ways.
I can sit here and cry about all the problems we have but, at the same time, there’s a lot to be hopeful about. Let’s all forge forwards together and try and make something good and sing our praises in the area.
MH: The Edgewing joint venture between ourselves, Italy and Japan to deliver the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) has launched, which is going to place an unprecedented demand on technology and people that we’ve not seen before in the UK and internationally.
The Strategic Defence Review highlights changes across the military landscape that opens up opportunities for more novel solutions that are far more accessible to small and medium enterprises. The opportunities are there, but it’s how we get better at finding out who’s out there through things like
We in the skills sector can support one another with any training, it’s really about working together on that. We can help with different ways of funding to support your training and learning. It’s important that relationships are formed. Let’s get talking the same language.
GB: The funding landscape is a nightmare, understanding and applying is almost impossible for SMEs so some kind of help is needed, to have eyes and ears out there via the regional clusters, or signposting to allow partnership collaborations to be formed.
DJ: There’s always the query about funding, ‘Where does the funding come from?’
The funding is out there; we have seen it in the last six or seven months. We’ve got three very large bids going in at the moment, one of them we’ve already been told will probably go down south.
We need to talk about what we are doing in the north, and I know that Paula and others are shouting from the rooftops.
My big project at the moment is to make UAV technology, drone technology, number one, coming from from the North West, from Preston and the University of Lancashire, in conjunction with the likes of BAE. We need to get that out there, because we have the ability and the skill sets here.
