ENGLISH LANGUAGE A LEVEL
Level 3 | Duration: 2 years North Devon | FTB012
In English Language, you will get to explore and appreciate the rich tapestry of our native tongue, both its past, its present and its future; learning how to analyse and comment and to create texts of your own to match an audience. You will also consider varieties and linguistic diversity found within the language.
You will investigate and evaluate English, looking at wide-ranging topics like gender, accent, child language acquisition and language change. You will consider how factors like society, work and prejudice can all play a part to shape our language.
You will also hone your analytical writing skills and try your hand at original articles; undertake your own language investigation, analysing your chosen topic in detail; and create an original piece of writing either to inform, persuade or to tell a story from a persuasive speech to a macabre short story!
The course will often raise opposing viewpoints which will create a platform for debate with fellow students and lecturers.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must hold at least five GCSEs including GCSE Maths at grade 4 and English Language at grade 5.
PROGRESSION Upon successful completion of this course, you may wish to move onto a higher level study of linguistics, speech therapy, law or English Language. An A Level in English Language is invaluable if you are considering teaching, the media or journalism, and it gives you excellent transferable skills.

ENGLISH LITERATURE A LEVEL
Level 3 | Duration: 2 years North Devon | FTB013
If you're an avid reader, and a lover of literature, this highly- regarded study programme is a natural choice for you. You'll read and examine a real variety of writing from different periods and genres, building on the analytical skills you've acquired at GCSE.
The course texts can vary, but currently include such great titles as 'The Great Gatsby' by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Shakespeare's 'Othello' and a collection of poetry. You will also learn how to analyse unseen texts and how to apply your skills in comparison of a wide variety of texts.
You will then be encouraged to follow your own interests through the comparison of two texts and go on to study a further range of texts such as 'The Handmaid's Tale' by Margaret Atwood, 'A Streetcar Named Desire' by Tennessee Williams and another collection of poetry.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must hold at least five GCSEs including Maths at grade 4 and English Language and English Literature at grade 5.
PROGRESSION This is a subject which is highly regarded everywhere. You may wish to progress to university to an English Literature degree or another humanities subject. Alternatively, you may decide to seek a career in the media, publishing, marketing or teaching.
FRENCH A LEVEL

In a globalised world, language skills are in demand. French is one of the main languages used by the UN and the European Union, but it is also the language of romance and great literature, like 'Les Miserables' and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'. This course will centre upon the key areas of speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation.
You will explore changes in French society and culture including work, education, music and traditions to help refine your French communication skills. You will also read a famous French text and watch French directed films such as 'Les Choristes' and 'Chocolat'.
You will also cover thought- provoking topics like the positive impact of immigration and the effect of occupation in World War II.
The course is varied, lively and enjoyable. There are opportunities for debates and discussions on topical issues which are in the news and you will enhance your existing knowledge of both the language and the countries where French is spoken.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You must hold at least five GCSEs including Maths at grade 4 and English Language and French at grade 5.
PROGRESSION An A Level in French can open up the world to you and enhance your other subjects, making you a more unique candidate for prospective employers. Or, you may decide to continue studying French at degree level, or combine it with another foreign language, English, law, business and management or media either at Petroc or further afield.
