Action – What Happens?
In this scene, Launcelot has come to take his leave of Shylock and to invite him to supper with Bassanio that evening. Although Shylock is reluctant at first, he decides to go anyway, just to eat at Bassanio’s expense. He warns Jessica to lock up the windows and doors of the house and not to look out the windows. Contrary to what Shylock says, Launcelot tells Jessica to look out the window later on as Lorenzo will be coming by. The scene ends with Jessica longing to be free from her father’s house.
