With your partner, turn to page 4 of your portfolio to write one sentence or phrase in the box for Act 5, Scene 1. This sentence or phrase should sum up the main action in the scene.
2. Quotes Quiz Turn to page 75 of your portfolio to review the important quotes for Act 5.
3. Individual Assignment – Choose one of the following activities: (a) Themes: Discuss what we have read about the theme of love and marriage or the theme of false appearances in this scene.
(b) Setting: Discuss the importance of the setting in this last scene of the play.
(c) What If…?: What if the play did not end here in Act 5, Scene 1? Imagine that there is an extra scene – Act 5, Scene 2 – which features Shylock alone on stage. Write the speech (or soliloquy) Shylock would make at the end of the play.
The speech can recap on events, look forward to Shylock’s future life, discuss his reaction to the trial or his daughter’s elopement with Lorenzo, etc. Write Shylock’s speech in modern English. The speech should be about 150–200 words.
