Writing about an Important Scene in the Play When writing about an important scene, consider the following:
Characters Who are the main characters in this scene? What do they say and do? How do the characters interact with each other in this scene? For example, a scene might show how a character has changed or developed. Where do we see this in the scene?
Action What happens in this scene to further the plot? Is this a climax scene? Is this a key scene for a major theme in the play such as love or conflict?
Does anything surprising/shocking/memorable/unexpected take place in this scene?
Atmosphere How is the atmosphere created? Is the mood tense or calm, romantic or sorrowful? How is this mood established? What images contribute to this mood?
Audience’s Response How did you respond to this scene? How do you feel about the events that take place in the scene and the characters?
Staging the Scene Imagine that you are staging/directing this scene. How would you stage it to maximise its impact? Consider the type of stage, advice to characters, visual and sound effects, the positioning of the characters on the stage, etc.
