Action – What Happens?
This scene is the climax of the bond theme in the play. Shylock remains unrelenting (not giving way) despite the Duke’s best efforts to persuade him to show mercy to Antonio. The case is to be presided over (conducted/overseen) by Portia, disguised as ‘Balthasar’, a learned judge, who has come on the recommendation of Doctor Bellario.
Portia appeals to Shylock to take up to three times the amount of money he is owed. Shylock refuses. Portia finds a legal loophole (flaw or glitch in the legal case) that eases the tension of the scene and Antonio is saved. Shylock is punished for his malice and vindictiveness (bitterness).
