Consider the character of Jessica. Action – What Happens?
In this scene, Launcelot is saying goodbye to Jessica, Shylock’s daughter. Jessica is very sad to see him go as she found that he helped to make her life bearable. She gives him a ducat (gold coin) and asks him to deliver a letter to her love, Lorenzo, who is a Christian.
It is obvious that Jessica has no real love for her father; she clearly disapproves of his behaviour. By the end of the scene, Jessica is planning to escape from her father, convert to Christianity and marry Lorenzo.
