Primary school curriculum • Primary education is delivered over eight years, with no formal examination at the end.
• It aims to nurture the spiritual, moral, cognitive, emotional, imaginative, social and physical needs of children so they have the ability to meet the demands of life now and in the future.
• It provides a broad learning experience by offering language (English and Irish); Mathematics; Social, Environmental and Scientific Education; ICT; Arts Music and Drama; Physical Education; Social, Personal and Health Education; and Religious Education. It also places particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy development.
• Teachers are encouraged to include a variety of teaching and learning approaches to cater for the different needs and learning styles of individual children. This helps create an inclusive learning environment.
Educational supports/resources available in primary schools • Interactive whiteboards: enable teachers to encourage children to participate more in their learning.
• Laptops and tablets: allow access to educational apps and websites that can assist educational advancement. These also allow children to take more control of their own learning.
• Educational psychologists: work in partnership with teachers, parents and children in identifying the educational needs of children.
• The School Book Grant Scheme. • The Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL).
