Sample answer: how to modify a ground-floor layout ?
Lifestyle and fashion trends are increasingly influencing design in the home. Many new houses are smaller, so the key requirement is to create a sociable living space that works efficiently for the modern family.
Suggest three changes you would make to the house plan shown in the diagram in order to accommodate the needs of a couple with two young children. In each case give a reason for your recommendation. (18) (HL 2008)
A
Put in sliding patio doors leading into the garden.
Add double doors to combine the living and dining area.
DINING
Knock the walls into the dining area and utility room.
KITCHEN
Extend the kitchen into the utility room.
Move the toilet to under the staircase. Knock the wall and extend the kitchen
LOUNGE GARAGE
Move the utility room into part of the garage.
Convert the garage into a playroom.
1. Knock the walls into the dining area and utility room: this will make the kitchen area bigger and more open plan. This larger space will suit the needs of a family with two young children, and allow for communal living.
2. Add double doors to combine the living and dining area: these can be opened to extend the space if the family are entertaining a crowd, and closed for privacy if needed.
3. Convert the garage into a playroom: this will create a space for the two young children to play, as well as providing an area to store their toys. This space would be more beneficial to a family with young children than a garage.
