HAC Day2017 by Gearoid O'Connor
Since its inception in 2010 the TJB HAC 105 Polo invitational has grown to become a stalwart on the British Army's polo calendar. This is largely a result of combining the history and prestige of the HAC, the facilities and location of London's polo club at Ham and the energetic polo when played by such combative people as the men and women of our Armed Forces.
Despite being the oldest regiment in the British Army the Honourable Artillery Company is relatively new to the sport of polo, having first fielded a team in 2008. The 105 trophy presented each year - named after the 105mm Artillery Cartridge which was fired at a Gun Salute at the Tower of London in honour of HRH Prince Charles - is now a sought after trophy amongst service teams.
The day is primarily run to provide members of HM Armed Forces (because it’s not just the Army who play!) with an opportunity to showcase some low goal polo to the public while also allowing the public to engage with the people in the Defence Forces and understand a little bit more about what they do. The day consists of three invitational matches interspersed with military displays to entertain the picnickers followed by an after party. Each year it also adopts a military charity to help raise its profile and raise some much needed funds.
What sets the day apart from many other polo events is that it is typically geared to encourage those who may never have experienced a day at the polo before and the cost of entry that has been fixed since its inception is all about affordability. The smiles on the faces on the day are a testament to the atmosphere comes rain or shine!
