Copa Caifa
CORONEL SUAREZ 2017 by Benjie Davis
The temperatures may have been plummeting in Richmond in February but it was quite the opposite in Coronel Suarez this year. The mercury was reading out at 35 degrees some afternoons and a month long heat wave had set in comfortably. No delays to the Argentine summer season meant the horses were in peak fitness and the groundsmen at La Esperanza Polo Club had the grounds in pristine condition for the 2018 Copa Califa.
The reciprocal arrangement between La Esperanza and Ham Polo Club involves complimentary entry to the Copa Califa tournament for any Ham players travelling to Argentina. This year teams of 8-10 goal handicaps made up the roster with some local entries, a La Esperanza side, a Cirencester Polo Academy team, some players from Italy and of course the Ham Polo Club team consisting of Charlie Ham, Benjie Davis, Will Healy and Cristobal Durrieu.
Ham had a tremendous semi-final, winning 7-2 and heading on into the final. The opposition in the final game, MYL Colores, were however a strong team.

By half time Ham trailed 6-2 on the scoreboard and needed to regroup. A better second half ensued with a strong beginning to the fourth chukka but in the end it was a 7-4 victory to MYL Colores over the team from Richmond.
La Esperanza hosted a delightful evening following the tournament with a prize presentation and Asado to celebrate the competition and its multitude of international participants. Many thanks go to Jose Bertola and his family for extending their invitation to all Ham players. Also to Martin fFrench Blake of Cirencester Polo Academy and LEPC for organising the teams and tournament.
Coronel Suarez is the global home town of polo and has the most successful polo team in history. The town and surrounding area has something for everyone and is a must for a polo holiday. January to March features tournaments from 4 up to 30 goal, keep in contact with Will Healy or Juan Cruz Araya Martelli about plans for playing this winter.
