WELCOMING OUR INCOMING

Howard Davis Dear Members,

This is an exciting time to be at Ham and an exciting time to be in our great city where our wonderful club remains the last bastion of historic London polo.

Those who find change hard to handle often accentuate the difficulties, and although one should never underestimate a challenge, rising to it is the key. Here at Ham we can take the spirit of rolling up sleeves and getting on with things, as exemplified by our Polo Manager Will Healy and Stable Manager Juan Cruz Araya, in overcoming the sudden loss of Argentinian grooms at the beginning of last season, as our inspiration in facing challenges anew. Uncomplaining they just got on with the task at hand delivering a wonderful result by keeping great polo flowing with capable new grooms.

From the club's excellent caterers, via the long- standing support crew of loyal and generous people who make up the friendly Ham crowd, the formidable polo office team and volunteer Committee members, we have a group of first-rate people who we can truly depend on to keep polo thriving in South West London.

Polo is a cosmopolitan sport where people come together from across the globe in a spirit of unrivalled friendship. This always makes both playing and watching a special experience. Those who love horses and dogs know how good it is to be in their midst at

our family friendly club. Throw into that eclectic mix the tradition of decades of dedication in nurturing international polo at Ham and there is no denying that Ham Polo Club is a jewel in polo’s crown.

Following in the footsteps of great polo stalwarts like Billy Walsh, past Chairman Geoffrey Godbold and, as I write, our current Chairman Nicholas Colquhoun- Denvers, in taking up the Chair may therefore not necessarily look the easiest of tasks. However that is to miss the point since it is precisely because of them that our club is ready to move to the next era. Without their dedication, supreme efforts and foresight such a challenge would be far harder.

So today our General Committee and I will continue the duties of nurturing a club that every member loves and maintaining a place full of so many special memories. I can honestly say that it fills me with pride to be asked to head up such a great team whose passion is to work tirelessly for loyal members without whom there would be no club.

In the spirit of international bonhomie I offer you the very warmest good wishes for 'une tres bonne continuation'!
