The first tournament of Ham’s 2017 season began with two hotly contested semi-finals on the jubilee ground. In the first match Matrix put in a strong performance vs La Primavera to book in to the final. After this a much closer affair between Vendetta and Andina resulted in Andina snatching the win in the final minutes of the match.
A close final on the Sunday was therefore expected. The first goal was swiftly put away by Matrix in the opening seconds establishing themselves well on the field. Matrix's Hamza Mawaz began battling with Andina's professional Juan Cruz Araya-Martelli in what became a close first half.
As the second half developed Mawaz used his excellent horsemanship to gain a strong lead for his team. Andina continued to fight drawing level in the final minute. This drew the game to an exciting extra chukka. In the final play for the game Mawaz took the ball the length of the field for the winning golden goal, with Matrix taking the

first silverware of the season. The best playing pony went to Tintera ridden by Juan Cruz Araya-Martelli of Andina.
In the subsidiary final La Primavera and Vendetta clearly felt they had a point to prove after the first day’s results and this showed in a fast paced opening chukka between the two teams. La Primavera had to work hard as a team to keep Vendetta's four goal player Jimmy Wood at bay. Vendetta put in some great goals but indiscipline gave several penalty goals to La Primavera keeping the scores level.
In the second half Wood continued to marshall his team excellently and established a good lead. La Primavera were not about to give up though putting in a great effort to close the gap and keep pursuing Vendetta on the scoreboard. The score difference was so slim in the final minutes that Gary Renucci's team only won by the tightest margin of half a goal.
