Chaiman A RETIRING
When Geoffrey Godbold was walking back from chukkas in Richmond Park in 1994 and said to me “you had better polish up your boots” I was frightfully offended as I had always been one of those players who prided himself on having remarkably well polished boots, something to do with my military days! The Chairman then explained that he would be retiring at the next AGM and he would like me to succeed him as Chairman. What a shock, what a responsibility…what a challenge…and I have always relished a challenge! I certainly never dreamed I would still be in post some 24 years later!
It has been a true honour for both Annie and I to serve Ham, the London Polo Club and its many and varied members since 1995. To some 24 years is a life time, to others a life sentence, to us it has been an unbelievable but enjoyable challenge, a heartfelt passion and a great privilege.
We are undeniably proud of what the Club and its members have managed to achieve over those intervening years and how it has grown and prospered through the dedication and hard work of a select band of rather special individuals who shared with us the vision and desire to see HPC transform from the `Kindergarten of Polo’ into what must be now one of the premier low-goal Clubs in the country, if not the world.
On a business front we have seen it gradually strengthen from a five figure per annum turnover to just over the seven figure mark. We have seen the Clubhouse and facilities grow and improve and the second Clubhouse pitch has made the largest single difference when many cautioned that it would be the ruination of the Club. The caterers, stabling, exercise track, irrigation benefits and livery business has allowed us to create an income stream to be able to professionally staff the Club and make it the envy of many in the polo world.
Annie and I would like to thank you all for the faith, confidence and support you have given us over the years through good times and bad. The time has come for a new generation to take over the reins and carry it forward for the coming decades although we will always be there to support whenever required. I would like to take this opportunity to show my support of the new regime by wishing Howard Davis and the General Committee my sincere wishes for the continued success of a very special Club and its very special members.
