Spanish casino operator CIRSA, owned by Blackstone, has become the biggest operator in Morocco by snapping up the Casino de Tanger, the largest of seven casinos in the country.

Situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the casino overlooks the Bay of Tangier and Strait of Gibraltar and offers several slot rooms as well as English Roulette, Blackjack, Poker Bonus Holdem, Stud Poker and Tree Card Poker.

Cirsa has signed a deal with the municipality of Tanger-Tetouan, which will also see it takeover operation of the 2,000sq.m hotel. It already operates two casinos in the southern city of Agadir. Morocco’s government currently allows for seven casino contracts that must be operated with a hotel and entertainment complex.

Taking over management of the Tangier Casino, CIRSA declared that it had become Morocco’s biggest casino operator. CIRSA began its operations in Morocco in 2016 with the acquisition of the casino Le Mirage, located in the coastal town of Agadir. CIRSA further expanded its portfolio acquiring Casino Atlantic, also in Agadir, to operate 280+ slots and 25+

tables across both locations. CIRSA’s acquisition of Casino de Tanger follows positive first half of the year trading, as the Barcelona-based gambling group declared corporate profits of €14m – reversing 2021 comparative losses of €105m.

Te results see CIRSA announce its first underlying profits since 2018, the year US private equity fund Blackstone acquired the Spanish gambling group.

Further positives saw its business units ‘match and outperform’ 2019 pre-pandemic results, as group H1 revenues grew by 93 per cent to €778m – helping H1 EBITDA double to €250m.

CIRSA outlined its plans to continue to expand its casino venues globally, in which the company operates 150 venues, primarily in Spain and South America.

Last year, Blackstone disclosed that it had placed CIRSA under a strategic review of Spanish market assets, monitoring how the business would rebound from the global COVID-19 pandemic.
