SLOTS FOCUS - INNOVATION PLAYSON
More than ever before, we need to focus on providing an entertaining experience that gives players different mechanics that can keep
them excited. For example, the Treasure Chest Feature in
Luxor Gold: Hold and Win has a huge impact on player engagement as the mechanic offers additional Bonus symbols which increases the potential for big wins.
Te short answer is yes, adjusting to the unique requirements set out by different markets is the main hurdle. In order to stay on top of this, we take into account the cultural differences when
brainstorming new game themes, as well as closely monitor local regulations to ensure our titles are always fit for purpose and hold the right certification.
Many of Playson's most successful games are based on popular themes such as fruits, diamonds and Egypt. How does Playson continually create games within these genres that stand out from all the others in the burgeoning lobbies of operators?
To stand out from the rest, you must be innovative and create a product that truly engages players. By improving the UI or a title’s infrastructure you can optimise the user experience, which results in superior performance, speed and quality.

While game features are arguably the most important aspect of slots, it’s important to not neglect the design of titles. Creating an immersive theme makes it easier for the player to maintain their interest in the slot. Tis is why we implemented a successful combination of complementary colours in Lion Gems: Hold and Win - the mix of yellow, orange and dark blue resulted in a warm and eye-catching visual encounter that captivated users.
Ultimately, all slots are inhibited by the fact they necessitate spinning reels. Whilst plenty has been said about copycat games in the industry, can innovation go too far the other way?
Potentially, but at the end of the day it’s the players who decide whether something innovative can work or not. Behind the scenes, a developer may think it’s cracked the next big thing, but when it goes to market, it fails to live up to expectations.
At Playson, we believe that innovation can be achieved by combining other forms of entertainment with gambling. For example, when you bring social elements into games, it allows younger demographics to enjoy a more interactive experience. Something that newer players are used to, as they’ve been brought up
on communal products through video gaming or even social media. Tere’s a lot we can learn from the wider entertainment industry, and this can allow developers to reinvent slots product in a way that won’t fail to resonate with players.
What are the prevailing slot trends and how do you see the industry evolving in the coming years?
More players are looking for games that feature high volatility. I feel this will continue to grow in the coming years, although we do need to be mindful of regulatory standards.
In addition, emerging demographics also demand quick and dynamic gameplay that can give them a short-burst of entertainment that complements the mobile-first experience. As players start to play more slots on the go, we’ll need to continue developing products that prioritise shorter gameplay whilst not diminishing the entertainment value of the slot.
Lastly, we’ve noticed a growth in the importance of streamers across the industry – a lot of companies are seeing how beneficial it can be to have a streamer involved in the timeline of a title’s release. It also highlights the benefit a social gaming experience can have, something which may have initially been neglected when we made the abrupt switch to online and offered more single-player games. But now, we’re very much aware of how slot fans prefer a social experience, something which is paramount in the video gaming industry.
Te need for socialisation and multiplayer games is something which will expand rapidly in the coming years.
