Making inroads with dedicated projects
Massachusetts is one of the new casino markets in the US. Prior to 2015 there was no casino gambling in the state, but thanks to new legislation for expanded casino gambling there are four new casinos planned, one of which opened in 2015.
Te two further casinos due to open include the MGM Springfield and the Wynn Boston Harbor.
In 2014 a licence was awarded to MGM for a resort casino licence in Region B (Western Massachusetts) called the MGM Springfield resort. Work began in 2015 and this is due to open in September 2018.
Te project is worth $950m and aims to enhance an urban area of the town and will include a 250 room four star hotel with spa, pool and roof deck, 125,000 sq.ft of gaming area with 3,000 slots, 75 tables, a poker room and high end VIP area, retail and restaurant space for 15 shops and

restaurants. Tere are also plans for an eight screen cinema, bowling alley and outdoor stage.
Springfield has been struggling after a difficult downturn in the economy whilst a tornado in 2011 levelled a section of Downtown Springfield. Te land once occupied by South End Community Centre and Howard Street School damaged by the tornado is the area MGM has earmarked for its new project.
Te project is being developed by Davenport Properties of Boston in partnership with MGM.
MGM has made an agreement to make advance
payments of $15m to the city during the construction phase and when it opens the city will receive more than $25m a year to be pumped into public safety projects, education and public needs.
It is expected to bring 3,000 permanent jobs and 2,000 construction jobs to the area. MGM has also recently opened Maryland’s National Harbor resort and has numerous properties in the US.
