Meanwhile the MGM National Harbor is the latest addition to the Maryland casino list and opened at the end of last year with 3,300 slots and 126 table games.
In 2016 the Maryland gaming market saw a significant expansion with the opening of the $1.4bn MGM National Harbor project.
Te casino opened in December 2016 and brings luxury gaming to the Capital Region and it is located in Oxon Hill just across the Potomac River from Virginia and next to Washing DC. It is located near to three major airports and MGM hopes to attract international visitors going to Washington as well as US tourists coming to see the nation’s capital.
It is Maryland’s sixth casino but as there are only a handful of casino resorts on the East Coast this is designed to draw people into the state not simply to be just a casino.
Te 23 storey hotel has 308 rooms and suites in total ranging in size from 400 to over 3,200 sq.ft and nightly room rates start at $300. Tere are various restaurants, 3,000 seat theatre and entertainment, meeting rooms, ballroom, conservatory and outdoor plaza, nightclub, spa and salon, infinity pool and high end retail outlets. Te casino is 125,000 sq.ft in size with 136 gaming tables, 39 poker tables, 3,300 slots and an Asian gaming pit with 16 Macau style Baccarat tables plus high limit lounge and luxury lounges making it MGM Resort International’s second largest of its 23 resort properties just behind the Las Vegas MGM Grand. MGM Resorts received the licence to develop the resort in 2013 after competing with bids from Penn National Gaming who wanted to develop a facility at its Rosecroft Raceway and also from Greenwood Racing for their bid to develop a facility near Maryland Route 210.
Construction began in 2014 and it opened two years later.
In 2014 MGM entered into a Community Benefits Agreement with Prince George’s County which means they had to provide a list of benefits to the country including 40 per cent of employment for county residents, create at least 3,800 new jobs, and contribute funds to local charities. MGM has apparently exceeded these limits whilst also improving public infrastructure. It is said MGM’s casino will bring in between $40 and $50m a year in revenue for the county.

Te MGM National Harbor opening comes two months after Trump’s Taj Mahal closed in Atlantic City which was the state’s fifth casino to close since 2014 amid rising casino competition in the surrounding states.
