Te general downturn in VIP gaming felt across Macau has dented the revenues of Galaxy Entertainment which at an unlucky $13bn, were down eight per cent year-on-year and down eight per cent quarter-on-quarter. Tese included the introduction of the full smoking ban plus increased competition from both local and regional casinos that have a significant economic advantage compared to Macau. We continue to progress with the previously announced $1.5bn renovation enhancement program in both Galaxy Macau and StarWorld Macau. Whilst there has been some disruption, we believe this enhancement programme will make our resorts even more attractive to guests. We anticipate to complete this programme in the early 2020.”

Liquor & Gaming NSW has issued its latest gaming machine data updates as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to boost transparency on gambling activity in local communities. Te latest reports cover 1 June 2018 to 30 November 2018 for clubs and 1 July 2018 to 31 December 2018 for hotels. Compared to the previous six- month period: Te number of machines in operation fell by 300 in clubs and by three in hotels. TClub gaming venues fell by seven, and the number of hotel gaming venues fell by 40. Net profit rose by 4.1 per cent for clubs and 13.4 per cent for hotels. Compared to the same six- month period in 2017: Numbers of machines in operation fell by 565 in clubs and by 184 in hotels – an overall fall of 749. Te number of club gaming venues fell by 17, while hotel gaming venues fell by 59. Net profit increased by 0.5 per cent for clubs and 6.4 per cent for hotels.

JAPAN – Melco is a strong contender for an IR License in Japan, with Melco Chairman Lawrence Ho recently announcing his commitment by stating the company may relocate to Japan from the company’s Hong Kong headquarters. “If we win a license to develop an integrated resort, I will personally move to Japan, my executive team will move to Japan, and our head office will move to Japan,” Ho said during a Japan Gaming Congress presentation in Tokyo.
Melco is in the race for an IR License in Osaka. Towards the end of April this year, Osaka officially announced that they are open to proposals from operators for the much awaited and coveted Integrated Casino License. The Japanese city plans to have an integrated resort operational before the 2025 World Expo. While Melco is capitalising on its development plan for the proposed casino, it has announced a budget of $10 billion which is at par with the competitors.
The Osaka IR site is a sprawling 49-hectare piece of land on the artificial island Yumeshima. The integrated resort would feature an international conference center with a capacity of over 6,000 guests and also five-star accommodation facilities with a minimum of 3,000 rooms.
