Having recently pulled out of acquisition talks with Crown Resorts in Australia, Wynn Resorts executives immediately switched their attention to the possible sale of the yet-to-be-opened $2.6bn casino just outside of Boston to MGM Resorts. Te sale was proposed two weeks after the Massachusetts Gaming Commission ruled that Wynn Resorts could retain its gaming license to operate the Encore casino, albeit with a US$35m fine.
Gaming regulators had questioned Wynn Resorts’ eligibility to hold a gaming license in the state after a Massachusetts Gaming Commission investigation found that former Wynn executives participated in a scheme to pay off and silence employees who alleged sexual assault and inappropriate behavior by company cofounder Steve Wynn.
Discussions for a possible sale began when Wynn CEO Matt Maddox and MGM CEO Jim Murren met in person in Las Vegas. Encore’s license is the only one the state will allow in the Boston area. MGM owns the only casino license for Western Massachusetts for its Springfield location. According to Massachusetts law, a company can only hold one casino license. If the sale had progressed, MGM would have been forced to sell the license for its casino in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Reasons for the decision to bail on the sale have multiplied since the announcement on May 22. Te most worrying claim in relation to the sale was that Wynn CEO Matt Maddox was simply infuriated with the Gaming Commission’s decision to impose not only the fine upon Wynn Resorts, but Mr. Maddox was angered by long- term monitoring conditions; the $500,000 fine assessed personally against him; and the commission’s demand that he get leadership coaching. A 3.7 per cent decline in Wynn’s first quarter results can’t have helped the situation, but this knee-jerk response is worrying.

Caesars Entertainment's Horseshoe Southern Indiana land-based casino that's currently under construction is being rebranded as Caesars Southern Indiana. Progress is being made on the $85m project to create a 100,000-square-foot gambling and entertainment facility. Te Harrison County casino is located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Te new casino will feature slot machines, table games, and poker; a bar and lounge; a nonsmoking gambling area; and will offer on-site sports betting. Te land-based casino is expected to open in December, while restaurants and other amenities are expected to follow in early 2020. Horseshoe Southern Indiana's riverboat is remaining open while the new casino is built.
