CHILE – The Chilean company Nueva Inversiones Pacífico Sur has signed a contract with South Africa’s Sun International to acquire 15 per cent of the ownership of the Sun Dreams casino and hotel chain, an operation that will allow them to increase their participation to 50 per cent. “The finalisation of the operation is subject to the usual conditions of operations of this nature, including the approval of the gaming control board (SJC),” said Jaime Wilhelm, general manager of Sun Dreams in the formal presentation before the financial market commission of Chile. He added that the operation is expected to be fully materialized during the first half of this year. After the purchase, Sun International will keep the remaining 50 per cent of the company.
Sun Dreams has now filed two appeals before the Santiago Appeals Court against the Chilean Gaming Board (SJC) through which it seeks to challenge and revert the decision to grant the licence to the casinos of Pucón and Puerto Varas to rival Enjoy. Sun Dreams argue that the resolutions of the SCJ are illegal. According to the company, Enjoy presented two projects with incorrect technical criteria, which allowed the company to reduce the costs associated with both projects. Sun Dreams owns the licenses of the casinos of Iquique, San Francisco de Mostazal, Temuco, Valdivia, Coyhaique and Punta Arenas; plus eight operations in the city of Lima, Peru; two operations in Cartagena de Indias in Colombia; two operations in Panama City, Panama and one casino in Mendoza, Argentina.

Te Association of Management and Maintenance Services for Casinos (AMS) has launched a new attack on Buneos Aires Governor María Eugenia Vidal’s gaming policy in the province. Te criticism comes after a 48 hour strike in every casino in Buenos Aires over the Easter weekend. Earlier in May, rhe Provincial Institute of Lottery and Casinos (IPLyC) informed gaming unions that the definitive closing date of the Mar de Ajó and Necochea casinos would take place on June 1, 2019. Deputy Secretary of the AMS, Agustín Calamante, explained there is "a lot of anger over the lack of dialogue" between unions and Vidal’s government. "Clearly there is no decision to reduce gaming, but put the money raised by gaming in the hands of some acquaintances," he said. “Te decision had not been communicated to the representative trade bodies.”
the municipal licences had been resolved the company will invest in the newly licensed casinos. Enjoy won the four tenders in which they competed, Viña del Mar, Pucón, Coquimbo and Puerto Varas and was able to increase the duration of the licenses from seven to fourteen years.
While the company was working on building work to meet with the new licence requirements it may ask for more time for extensions to complete work on new venues in some cases he said. While in Viña del Mar and Coquimbo the changes are focused on the interior of the casinos, in Pucón and Puerto Varas construction work will be more extensive, as that they must build new infrastructure.
In August 2017, US based private equity firm Advent International announced that it had signed an agreement with Enjoy. Advent Internationla announced plans to invest as much as US$118m in the casinos in Coquimbo, Viña del Mar, Pucón and Puerto Varas in the next two to three years.
