ADVERTISING When the new Act was being discussed, the idea of a blanket ban on gambling advertising was called for. Although this did not come to pass, under the new Act, GRAI is granted significant powers to regulate gambling advertising, and there are now several restrictions in place. Te most notable inclusion is a watershed ban
on broadcast (television, radio, Spotify) gambling advertising between the hours of 5.30am and 9pm. In addition, specific provisions have also been introduced to regulate advertising on social media.
Gambling ads can only be aimed at individuals who hold an account with the gambling operator and actively follow the operator’s social media. A licensee cannot advertise by electronic means

YouTube ads removed after complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority that they promoted gambling as a means of resolving personal financial difficulties. In terms of sponsorship, a licensee cannot
sponsor an event where the majority of attendees are children, an event aimed at children, or a
club, team, or premises where children are members. Breaches by a licensee can result in suspension
or revocation of a licence and fines or prison sen- tences, depending on the severity. GRAI can decide how much advertising can
be broadcast, the duration of the advertisement, and the number of ads shown on outdoor billboards or in publications or via broadcast media. GRAI also has powers to impose further restrictions as needed.
INDUCEMENTS Inducement to gamble was a contentious issue discussed during the development of the Act. Te initial draft proposed a blanket ban across all forms of inducements. Tis was later amended to allow inducements, such as VIP treatment, free bets, and special offers, to the public, but prohibiting them from being targeted at specific individuals or groups. GRAI has the authority to decide whether inducements would encourage or contribute to excessive or compulsive gambling or lead to an increase in the level of participation in gambling. Age verification systems are a fun- damental requirement for all operators.
