AFRICA’S GAMBLING DIVIDE REFORM, CRACKDOWN AND FRAGMENTATION
It has been a turbulent time for a number of key online markets in Africa as lawmakers across the continent continue to wrestle with the complexities and challenges of online gambling regulation. A lack of oversight in many jurisdictions has exacerbated social challenges such as gambling related harm especially amongst younger players. In addition lawmakers are keenly aware of the potential revenue a strictly controlled market will generate for state coffers. Consequently lawmakers in a number of jurisdictions have had a good hard look at their gambling laws and have overhauled or are in the process of overhauling their regulations completely as a result.
