Te detective in charge of the investigation said that the influencer demonstrates "total contempt for the police and the justice system." Like many other influencers Campelo claims that he has done nothing wrong.
However, authorities are clearly taking this very seriously and influencers are paying the price. Brazilian influencer Maria Karollyny Campos Ferreira, known as Karol Digital, and her boyfriend, Dhemerson Rezende Costa, have been in jail since August 2025. Tey are suspected of involvement in an illegal gambling scheme, criminal association, money laundering, and crimes against the public economy.

SENATE CALLS OUT INFLUENCERS At the end of 2024 lawmakers established the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on Betting to investigate the impact of online gambling on Brazilian families' finances, potential connections to money laundering by criminal organisations, and the role of digital influencers in promoting these activities.
In the final report, the CPI’s rapporteur Soraya Tronicke proposed the indictment of 16 people, including influencers such as Virgínia Fonseca who has over 52 million followers on Instagram. According to Tronicke, Fonseca’s earnings were tied to the losses of bettors. She argued that Fonseca simulated false profits, misleading millions of followers. According to Tronicke, the indictments were based on documents that reached the CPI. Fonesca denied this.
During a speech the senator also pointed her finger at another influencer Deolane Bezerra who has around 22 million followers on Instagram. After the speech, Deolane posted a video on social media and said she was being targeted by politicians. "It's very easy to attack Deolane,” she said referring to herself in the third person. “But I have the people [...] I'm judged, massacred, and insulted," she said in an emotional post.
