INSIGHT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY GROSVENOR CASINOS

I’ve never taken on a role

because I want to get to the next role. I think my career has been much more

organic. I’ve moved into a

role, I've enjoyed the role, I've learned everything I can and then felt I’m ready for the

next role. I think I have been fortunate that the people

around me have encouraged me, recommended different things, asked me about development programmes

and suggested opportunities for growth. I've always been led by what’s enjoyable, which has readied me for the next role.

Was your career path clearly defined? Did you always know what the next step and next role would be?

At Grosvenor Casino, the career steps are very clearly defined: from dealer through to pit boss, onwards to manager, then operations manager, then the next stage is GM. Some people come into the business from the outside and travel a different route, but from a gaming perspective, that tends to be the typical way of progression.

Would you say you’re career-orientated or job- focused?

I’ve never taken on a role because I want to get to the next role. I think my career has been much more organic. I’ve moved into a role, I've enjoyed the role, I've learned everything I can and then felt I’m ready for the next role.

I've been on maternity leave twice and I remember being encouraged to complete my grey licence while I was pregnant the first time. Getting that licence was

tough and the advice was to do that before having a

family, as it's easier without young children - and they

were spot on! Grosvenor has supported me in everything and I've never had a reason to leave.

You've worked in almost every casino operations role in your career. What was the hardest and why?

I think all the positions have been a challenge. I don't think there’s one role that’s been harder than another. As a General Manager, you obviously have more accountability than any other role, but I've enjoyed that role so much, and I still do. So, I wouldn't say there was one position in particular that is harder than another.

Are there things you still find challenging? And have you had to make sacrifices for your career?

I think running a 24 -hour business can be a challenge to a certain degree. I've got quite a large team and need to be supportive to many people. And, obviously, we have a life outside of work as well. Sometimes it's just making sure the work -life balance is fair and correct.

Te fact is, every day is different, you get to meet so many different people, and it’s a great fun environment to work in. And maybe because my career has become quite organic, it's not been forced. I've not been in a position where I've been worried or stressed too much.
