4. Tone Te tone of a poem refers to the atmosphere created in the poem and the feelings of both the poet (or an imagined speaker) and the reader. Tink of tone of voice and how it changes if someone is happy or sad, angry or calm, bitter or pleased about something. Poems are ideally meant to be read aloud, which helps establish tone. However, the words chosen and the images used in a poem can convey powerful feelings and create atmosphere. Ask yourself the following questions: What is the atmosphere or mood of this poem? How is it created? What is the poet feeling about his subject matter? What do I feel aſter reading the poem? Make sure that you can explain the answers to these questions and find evidence to back up your points.
