Final Assessment Examination


1. General Information As part of your assessment in English for your Junior Cycle, you will be required to do a Final Assessment Examination at the end of your Tird Year which will be worth 180 marks - 90% of your overall grade.


Tere will be one examination paper which incorporates an answer booklet. It will present you with stimulus material (previously unseen material) and will also be linked thematically to the texts you have been working with during Second and Tird Year. You will have two hours to complete the paper.


Tis Final Assessment Examination requires you to: l Read and engage with texts l Comprehend what you have read l Respond to what you have read


2. Content and Format


Te content and format of the examination papers may vary from year to year, so you need to read the instructions on the front of the paper very carefully; take careful note of the marks for each question and complete the tasks within the time limit provided on the front page of the exam paper.


The front page of the exam booklet will state:


l the year and the day of the examination. l the exact time, e.g. Morning 9:30 to 11:30. l the level, e.g. Higher or Ordinary Level English. l the number of marks for the entire paper l a box for your examination number (you must write this in the box) l a box for the Centre Stamp (that will be filled in for you)


The second page of the exam booklet:


Te paper may be given a theme which will be clearly stated at the top of the second page of the exam paper.


You will then be given clear instructions regarding the number of sections and the number of questions which you must answer. Tese will change from year to year. For example, a section might be referred to as: Section A. Reading Texts to Understand - Shakespearean Drama. Tis will be followed by the number of marks for the section and the number of questions which you must answer.


Each section will be worth a stated number of marks which will be divided up depending on the questions set. You will be given an indication of how much time to spend on each section and you should make sure you don’t exceed the time limits.


Te questions don’t carry equal marks, so you need to pay careful attention to the space allowed in the booklet and the marks for each question. Te marks will be stated at the top of each question. Space to write your answers will be provided aſter each question. Space is also provided for extra work. Label any extra work clearly with the question number and part.
