Rhythm comes from a Greek word which means measured motion and is the pattern of stresses or beats within a line of verse. All speech has a rhythm formed by stressed and unstressed syllables.
A word with only one syllable is called a monosyllable. Rhythm is a natural effect within poetry. Each word has its own rhythm, but a phrase or sentence can have a distinct rhythm too.
Examples:
And the cheers and the jeers of the young muleteers = dadaDUM, dadaDUM, dadaDUM, dadaDUM. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall = DUM da, DUM da, DUM da da DUM.
