40 Parallel Photoreactor Offers Easy Interchangeable Wavelength Excitation
Asynt has introduced a new modular version of its popular LightSyn Illumin8 photoreactor. This innovative system provides researchers with the flexibility to change quickly and safely between a selection of high-power light emitting diodes (LEDs) operating at wavelengths including UV (365 nm) and blue (450 nm).
The LightSyn Illumin8 allows chemists to run up to 8 photochemical reactions in parallel using low-cost 8 mL tubes. Compact in size, this affordable yet high performance photoreactor offers up to eight interchangeable modules of eight UV or coloured LEDs with safety interlocks to ensure light-tight photochemical reactions. With each high-power LED positioned close to a corresponding reaction tube, the LightSyn Illumin8 efficiently delivers an even photon flux to each position, ensuring the consistency of your photochemical reactions. Integral active cooling also ensures that your reactions do not overheat from the photo irradiation.
Designed to replace ‘homemade’ photoreactor systems which offer inconsistent results and questionable operator safety, the modular LightSyn Illumin8 is simple to set-up, operationally flexible and easy to use with just one single on/off switch.
Simply mounted on a standard magnetic hotplate stirrer, photochemical reactions in your LightSyn Illumin8 can be powerfully agitated and heated up to 80°C. To cater for air sensitive materials, connectors on top of the LightSyn Illumin8 allow for an inert atmosphere or vacuum to be applied to each reaction tube. These features, coupled with the ability to safely sample or make additions to each ongoing reaction, make the LightSyn Illumin8 the perfect tool for consistent and reliable photochemical reaction screening experiments.

Polarimeter Portfolio Update: Measure. Comply. Perform.
The new MCP 4100 was recently added to Anton Paar’s MCP polarimeter portfolio. All instruments in the portfolio exceed the accuracy requirements of all common pharmacopoeias. With MCP 5100’s and 5500’s supreme accuracy (up to <±0.0020 °OR), even the smallest impurities and changes in optically active substances can be identified.
Proving compliance and approaching zero-error targets mean the world in highly regulated industries. MCP polarimeters, with seamless IT integration, are audit-proven solutions. The traceable and guided calibration processes, which can be done without manual data input, and the built-in camera, which lets operators see sample abnormalities, prevent errors from occurring.
QC labs need to fulfil efficiency expectations. Anton Paar has developed the world’s fastest, most-precise Peltier temperature control for its polarimeters. It eliminates sample temperature differences of 2°C in less than 30 seconds. Minimum cycle times help users reach their targets.

Pipetting Solutions for Accelerated COVID-19 Testing
Integra Biosciences’ VOYAGER adjustable tip spacing pipettes and EVOLVE manual pipettes are playing pivotal roles in COVID-19 testing at Children’s Minnesota, an award-winning, non-profit acute paediatric healthcare group in the ‘twin cities’ of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. These innovative tools have helped the group’s molecular laboratory to process more samples, more effectively in this unpredictable sociomedical period.
The rise of the pandemic has forced the 16-strong laboratory team to restructure its workflows and expand its in-house capacity to enable high-priority COVID-19 testing. To help meet this challenge, the team invested in a number of six and 12 channel VOYAGER adjustable tip spacing pipettes - as well as single channel EVOLVE manual pipettes - using the increased availability of equipment and multichannel pipetting capabilities to rapidly expand their workload. These ergonomic pipettes have also helped to alleviate some of the wrist and hand pain associated with repetitive sample transfers, as some laboratory staff were starting to develop repetitive strain injury.
Julie Laramie, Laboratory Technical Specialist at Children’s Minnesota, explained: “The Integra pipettes are well made and really user friendly. The VOYAGER’s adjustable spacing makes it very simple to pipette between racks of different standard formats, allowing us to seamlessly move from sample extraction to amplification to detection. This reduces the total number of transfer steps by moving multiple samples rapidly in parallel, substantially shortening processing times. It has also decreased the number of errors compared to using a single channel pipette, and we now almost exclusively use the VOYAGER and EVOLVE pipettes for COVID-19 testing.”
