New Low Volume Air Sampler for PFAS Analysis
The FM4 from GL Sciences BV is an air sampler developed for sampling per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in air. The FM4 design is a groundbreaking approach, which enables the simultaneous collection of particulate and gaseous PFAS in air.
In conventional collection methods based on filtration, accurate measurement is often difficult. Gaseous PFAS may be adsorbed on particles collected on the filter surface. Additionally, a gaseous PFAS
may change to its non-volatile form during sampling. To solve these limitations, the FM4 was designed in such way that it minimises the contact between particles and gas and three types of adsorbents, which enable simultaneous collection of ionic and neutral/volatile PFAS.
Simple High Performance Preparative HPLC
The Teledyne ISCO ACCQPrep HP150 was developed and designed with the ease of a Flash system in mind. It does not follow the traditional path of an analytical system, but rather this system has been designed to be intuitive and easy-to- use.
The ACCQPrep HP150 eliminates the unnecessary and complex integration parameters found in many of the HPLC systems in today’s market. Teledyne ISCO’s PeakTrak® software, which currently drives their CombiFlash®
product
line, is the basis for controlling the ACCQPrep HP150. By using this software, the need for a standalone PC is eliminated. This results in a smaller, more compact unit with an integrated touch screen interface.
Enjoy the confidence associated with Teledyne ISCO’s active solvent
and waste level monitoring which reduces the risk of solvent spills. In addition, all sample and collection racks are RFID coded eliminating the potential of missed tubes.
An exciting feature of the ACCQPrep HP150 is the Focus Gradient Generator. When activated, the user is prompted to run a preset scouting gradient then they select the target peak for purification and the focused gradient is automatically programmed into the system.
Standard features include: flow rates from 1 to 150 mL/min allow development of Prep methods directly on the system without the need for pump head changes; operating pressure up to 6000 psi; choice of UV or UV-Vis plus ELSD and MS options.

INNOVATIVE INSTRUMENTS FOR LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY
HPLC Analysis of Phosphoramidites using RP or NP Conditions
Synthetic oligonucleotides are extremely promising candidates for biopharmaceuticals in a wide range of diseases. This is why nucleic acid therapeutics such as silencing RNA (siRNA), messenger RNA (mRNA) and antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) are gaining considerable attention in current research.
Phosphoramidites are the essential part of the chemical synthesis of oligonucleotides, short fragments of nucleotides and analogues. To prevent any side reactions on residual reactive sites such as hydroxyl and amino groups during oligonucleotide synthesis, these groups must be protected. Therefore, the highly reactive native nucleotides are modified with four different protecting groups. During the chemical oligonucleotide synthesis, errors can occur which is why the purity of the phosphoramidites needs to be closely monitored. In a new application note two different separation modes - reversed phase (RP) and normal phase (NP) - are used for the analysis of four different phosphoramidites. Due to the complexity of these molecules different interactions can be used in order to achieve reasonable retention and resolution. As phosphoramidites have a chiral centre at the phosphorus atom two isomers are present resulting in double peaks occurring in the chromatograms.
All separations were performed using the highly robust YMC-Triart columns which are an ideal choice for modern biochromatography applications. For RP separations a YMC-Triart C18 column was used resulting in sharp peaks. A YMC-Triart SIL a mobile phase containing triethylamine as additive. Excellent resolution was obtained for all compounds.

The collected PFAS is eluted with organic solvents and quantified by gas chromatography- tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Conventional activated carbons typically contain complicated pores. They have been used as adsorbents for PFAS. However, the complete elution of adsorbed PFAS is difficult to achieve. Therefore, a new functional activated carbon adsorbent (GAIAC™) was developed, which was used as the gas-type adsorbent. GAIAC™ is an innovative sorbent that is composed of synthetic resin fibre with optimised pore and surface activity, which enable the collection and elution of PFAS.
The FM4 Air Sampler was tested with a wide range of PFAS and achieved excellent recovery rates. It is lightweight and compact, easy to carry and, with its very small installation footprint, easy to deploy.
