New Workstation Prevents Cross-contamination and Protects Valuable Samples

Sensitive and critical laboratory applications require an uncompromising clean environment and must be protected from potential contamination by bacteria, DNA or RNA. The new GuardOne®

workstation from Starlab offers the

ideal solution for this - the workstation minimises the risk of cross-contamination and protects valuable samples and reagents.

The GuardOne® workbench with quiet, energy-saving fan, real-time measurement of airflow and two-stage

filter system creates a cleanroom environment according to ISO 5. The UV lamp timer allows the work area to be decontaminated quickly and easily at any time. The workstation is made of transparent, UV-impermeable polycarbonate for optimum visibility of the working area, and complete protection against UV radiation during decontamination. A safety switch on the hinged front panel prevents accidental activation of the UV light whilst working.

During the development of GuardOne® , the focus was on maximum user convenience and minimal environmental

impact. The intuitive controls are operated via a touch screen that is compatible with laboratory gloves, and lab work is made even easier with an integrated Lab Timer and automated monitoring of the UV lamp and HEPA filters. An easy to follow, colour-coded display allows the status of the GuardOne®

Typical applications for the GuardOne®

is one of the most energy-efficient devices of this kind, available on the market. workstation from Starlab include: sample preparation prior to

workbench to be checked at a

glance. The space-saving, flat-packed workstation can be assembled without tools within 15 minutes. UV lamps with a service life of up to 9,000 hours, energy-saving LED lamps and state-of-the-art fan technology ensures GuardOne®

thermocycling of DNA or RNA; post-PCR techniques; binding studies and other incubations; cell culture work; sterile solution preparations; (molecular) plant physiology (use the innovative red-light option for light sensitive experiments); microbiological culture work; any sensitive experiments requiring a controlled, clean environment.

Starlab is holding a competition where laboratories can win the new GuardOne®

in the life science sector. For the participation in the competition, a photo of the old workstation (all brands) needs to be uploaded at ilmt.co/PL/9XQn

Maintaining Integrity of Thermally Sensitive Biological Assays

The DrySyn ChilliBlock from Asynt allows you to undertake sensitive biological assays in a temperature-controlled manor, vastly reducing the risk of expensive biological samples, reagents or enzymes degrading due to adverse temperature conditions.

Traditionally methods of cooling biological assays have relied upon direct immersion in insulated ice buckets which are prone to considerable temperature variability, sample contamination and loss of wetted labels. In addition, using this methodology can only maintain a cooled temperature for a limited time, and requires staff to periodically monitor and add new coolant (ice).

Modular in design, the ChilliBlock base can be simply attached to most laboratory heating / cooling circulators thereby enabling stable temperature control at ‘important biological temperatures’ such as 0°C or 37°C for long periods of time. Designed for versatility, the ChilliBlock has interchangeable blocks for tubes, vials and plates as well as custom DrySyn blocks to fit any Eppendorf tube or vial.

For laboratories required many to undertake larger numbers of biological assays, the low profile of the Chilliblock allows it to be fully compatible with robotic sample handling systems.

Manufactured from durable anodised Aluminium, ChilliBlock’s offer good chemical resistance and will reliably allow you to maintain the integrity of your thermally sensitive biological samples for many years.

Autoclave Range Features Internal Data Archiving as Standard

Data acquisition and logging of laboratory equipment cycle data is becoming increasingly important for many laboratories and institutions. LTE Scientific’s Touchclave-Lab autoclave range addresses this issue in a number of ways.

Unlike many autoclave manufacturers, Internal Data Archiving is a standard feature on all Touchclave-Lab models. Up to 5000 cycles are stored on an internal flashcard, which, when full is simply replaced. The data from the flashcard is easily downloaded to a PC using LTE’s Touchclave-NET software. All data is checksum protected, and thus tamper-proof.

Alternatively, data can be downloaded in real-time to a remote PC. This is achieved either through a hard-wired installation for PC’s which are close to the autoclave, via an ethernet connection, or even through WIFI for data which needs to be collected centrally.

In addition, LTE can provide a wide range of graphic recorders or data acquisition systems to provide graphical and historical cycle data. These can be configured to meet 21CFR11 if required.

Touchclave-Lab autoclaves offer large loading volumes whilst taking up minimal floor space. They are available in a range of capacities from 150 to 450-litres and can be supplied with internal heaters, steam generators, or fed from customers own steam supply as required. The range incorporates a state-of-the-art touch-screen control system for entering and displaying all commands, cycle and program data. ‘K’ models include a water jacket cooling system to enhance cycle performance and can also be fitted with vacuum and steam jackets allowing effective drying of porous and other loads. In addition, powered door upgrades can be added to any Touchclave-Lab model.

All LTE products are supplied with Sterling anti-bacterial powder coating.

A choice of eight user-programmable cycles can be stored in the memory, with an optional memory expansion facility boosting the total to 20. All Touchclave-Lab autoclaves can be supplied with a number of additional features including vacuum, air ballast, effluent retention and high security filters. For after sales care. LTE employs a 14-strong team of UKAS and HTM-qualified engineers to carry out servicing, maintenance, calibration and validation throughout the UK. More information online: ilmt.co/PL/XyL0
