Flow Sensors for Medical Applications

Titan Enterprises reports on increasing use of its proprietary Atrato ultrasonic flowmeter technology for medical applications including real- time drug monitoring, metering of coolants for chemotherapy treatment and blood flow systems. Ultrasound flow measurement has over recent years shown great promise in medical applications, initially with Doppler shift technology, and more recently with time of flight systems such as the Atrato.

Beneficially Atrato is a true inline non-invasive flowmeter technology without the contorted flow path and disadvantages of alternative ultrasonic flowmeter designs. It can handle flows from laminar to turbulent and is therefore largely immune from viscosity effects. Based upon a patented time-of-flight ultrasonic technology, Atrato is able to operate over very wide flow ranges (200:1) delivering excellent accuracy (better than ±1.0% of reading), linearity and repeatability, critical parameters for medical applications.

Also based on Atrato technology. Titan Enterprises Metraflow ultrasonic flowmeter offers the additional advantage of a clean bore with no inclusions or distortions and has proved more than adequate at responding to the dynamics of several medical blood flow systems.

Pipette Tips Deliver Superior Liquid Handling and Dispensing

Porvair Sciences has launched a new range of Liquid Handling Pipette Tip Filters that provide unmatched capabilities to block out aerosol and liquid contaminants.

Hilary Bishop, Product Manager for Porous Products commented: “Using our proprietary Vyon® porous plastics, the new pipette tip filters are fully compliant with FDA, USP Class VI and European Pharmacopoeia statutory regulations as well as being free from heavy metals. The unique combination of these ultra-clean materials, with excellent porosity properties, overcomes the traditional pipette tip challenges of reproducibility during high volume manufacturing and issues with cross-contamination.”

She added: “Manufacturing to tight tolerances with an excellent edge finish ensures our pipette tip filters always provide an optimum fit into your pipette tip enabling labs to routinely achieve superior liquid handling and dispensing. Porvair pipette tip filters are produced using state-of-the-art inline technology for measuring air flow and thickness which delivers highly consistent products that ensure the robustness and reproducibility of your liquid handling.”

Pfeiffer Vacuum has received yet another major order for leak detectors from CERN. The particle accelerator LHC (Large Hadron Collider) has a circumference of some 27 kilometres and collides proton or ion beams at nearly the speed of light. The LHC is the largest vacuum installation on Earth with thousands of welds, flanges, feedthroughs and complex internal circuits. For the accelerated particles to travel in beam lines, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) is essential. To maintain such a very low pressure it is crucial to keep the leak rates as low as possible. The most advanced leak detector technology from Pfeiffer Vacuum has been chosen by CERN. Andreas Schopphoff, Head of R&D Market Segment: “The cooperation between CERN and Pfeiffer Vacuum is based on many years of working together in a spirit of trust. We are very proud that our advanced leak detection technology has been chosen once again for its future projects.”

The leak detector ASM 340 is an easy to operate device that can detect leaks down to < 5 x 10-13 Pa m3/s. With a built in backing pump of 15 m3/h small as well as big volumes can be leak tested. The patent pending functionality makes it possible to start at 100 hPa which can be very convenient for such a big installation like the LHC. Furthermore, the leak detector is so compact that it can be easily manoeuvred underneath the cryostats and beam lines of the LHC.

Nowadays helium leak detectors are based on a patented design from Dr Becker at Pfeiffer Vacuum who proposed to use a turbopump as a kind of filter and safety element in front of a mass spectrometer. At the time, CERN was one of the first customers to buy this innovative technology and has continued to be a major user of Pfeiffer Vacuum products to this day. Generating the vacuum inside the LHC, measuring it and analysing the partial pressure requires comprehensive vacuum technology, a major part of which is being supplied by Pfeiffer Vacuum.

New Liquid Handling Platform Reduces Assay Development Time and Improves Robustness in High Throughput Screening

TTP Labtech’s dragonfly® discovery novel liquid handling technology has been developed to provide researchers with a standard platform whereby they can easily develop complex assays and screen them in a robust and cost efficient manner.

TTP Labtech have continued to collaborate closely with leading pharmaceutical companies on the further development of dragonfly discovery. With an aim to deeply understand the needs of the scientists involved in early stage drug discovery, TTP Labtech have worked together with their collaborators to develop an instrument that helps the scientists achieve their goal of reducing drug discovery cycle times. The platform enables rapid and reliable low volume (200 nL upwards) dispensing from a positive displacement disposable pipette (with 4 mL capacity), and 96,384 & 1,536 well compatibility, to allow assays to be developed directly in high density plate format using a common liquid handling platform. The combination of innovative technology and the incorporation of specific hardware and software features requested by collaborators ensures that dragonfly discovery not only significantly reduces assay development time, but also enables more seamless transition from assay development in to the screening phase. Additionally, it permits them to routinely deploy design of experiment (DoE) as part of assay development, particularly beneficial for complex cellular assays.

Joby Jenkins, Director – Product Strategy, TTP Labtech, commented: “We are extremely excited to be launching this innovative liquid handling technology to the market. Dragonfly discovery provides high speed, non-contact dispensing from a disposable, positive displacement tip, which will effectively enable researchers to reduce assay development time as well as improve assay robustness in HTS.”
