New Nutrient Medium Dosing System Ideal for Biochip Filling
New active ingredients require new tests. For ethical, economic and scientific reasons, animal experimentations are increasingly being replaced by biochips. Human cells from different organs are placed on the chips and supplied with nutrient solution via small channels. In this way, blood circulation and metabolic functions of the human body are simulated. Monitoring after the addition of active substances such as drugs, cosmetics or chemicals allows conclusions to be drawn about the reactions and processes in the human body.
The continuous supply of the cells with liquid nutrient medium is a great challenge, as even small variations influence the test results. The LiquiDoS dosing system by HNP Mikrosysteme contains a highly precise, low-shear micro annular gear pump (mzr pump), which is ideally suited for filling the biochip. Volume flows from 1.5 µl/min to 72 ml/min as well as dosing volumes from 0.25 µl are gently realised with the LiquiDoS.
In addition to the micropump, LiquiDoS contains a filter, a shut-off valve and the mzr-Touch Control. The graphical user interface facilitates the handling of the system by direct input of dosing quantity and dosing duration. Furthermore, the mzr-Touch Control enables simple programming, fast switching between manual and automated dosing tasks as well as reproducible results.

Next Generation Thermoshaker Combines Versatility and Simplicity
The new IKA Matrix thermoshakers combines concentrated mixing power in the millilitre range with tried and tested and intuitive IKA menu navigation.
The IKA Matrix thermoshaker product range now achieves optimal mixing results - from the smallest blood samples, to pharmaceutical agents, to DNA/RNA samples all the way to ELISA assays. The mixing movement is extremely effective thanks to its high speed and large shaking strokes. Most importantly, the IKA Matrix achieves outstanding mixing results with the greatest possible user-friendliness in various laboratory applications. This is due to the inclusion of IKA’s intuitive menu navigation on the new thermoshakers, which makes lab work easier and more convenient.
In addition, the Matrix series impresses with its automatic attachment detector and convenient quick release for exchanging inserts and attachments quickly and safely. These robust and very stable devices can, depending on the model, adjust the speed of the orbital movements automatically to match the insert, the attachment and corresponding fill volume. Moreover, the programmable ramps ensure automatic and safe control.
Ziath announces the Mohawk Semi- Automated Tube picker, an innovative new system that sets the standard for frozen or thawed sample tube picking from 96-position racks.
The Mohawk has been designed to work out of the box, and needs no set up or calibration. Instrument control is through the new user- friendly software which provides an intuitive interface for easy operation. Tubes can be picked from a single rack or a picklist can be set up to select tubes across multiple racks. Pick list operations are normally started from reading the 1D code on a rack placed onto the Mohawk, but manual selection is also possible.
Other key features of the new semi- automated tube picker include the ability to generate picklists externally in other software applications, or create a template using the Mohawk’s own software. For extra sample tracking and security, the Mohawk can be connected directly to a 2D-barcode scanner for tube confirmation. In this mode it can also generate picklists directly from the tube barcodes. For further traceability, a 1D-scanner for reading the rack barcode is included as standard.
The compact size, intuitive software and ability to integrate make the Mohawk a valuable asset in sample management applications with thawed or frozen tubes in SLAS standard format racks.
