42 Comprehensive Autoclave Range Impresses at Medlab 2020

The Priorclave stand at this year’s Medlab exhibition in Dubai highlighted the comprehensive range of laboratory and research grade autoclaves designed and manufactured by this British engineering company. With an autoclave product range of more than 60 models in various configurations and styles that include benchtop, front loading, top loading and stackable units, Priorclave has been solving sterilising needs around the world.

Visitors to the Priorclave stand were able to examine a build quality that has established a reputation for delivering robust, durable autoclaves that deliver the ultimate in sterilising performance.

A key highlight on the stand is the QCS front loading autoclave range. Superb sterilising performance, operational reliability and low energy usage make theses eminently suited to use in diverse industrial sectors such as food, drink, dairy, pharmaceutical, agricultural, education, healthcare as well as numerous research and educational institutes within the public sector.

The featured Priorclave EH100 is a 100 litre laboratory autoclave that has a chamber diameter larger than most, bringing increased versatility and paving the way for more efficient lab use since both small and taller than usual items can be sterilised in the same process. This benefit can often save the lab manager from investing in larger, heavier and more costly rectangular autoclave.

This leading product design is equipped with TACTROL® 3, a new controller with a crystal-clear user interface LCD display and easier function settings. It also has a quick-view menu that shows all the functions that have been set on any select program.

If required Priorclave autoclaves can be fitted with BEE LIVE, a system that brings Wi-Fi connectivity to the entire range of Priorclave laboratory autoclaves and research sterilisers. It provides immediate connectivity to a variety of Wi-Fi enabled devices such as Smart phones, tablets, iPads and laptops, enabling lab staff to remotely monitor sterilising parameters. Maximise PCR Success by Minimising Potential DNA Contamination Syngene is delighted to announce it is now supplying the AirClean®

AC600 Series of PCR Workstations. Some of the Workstations include HEPA

filtration and all use UV irradiation to minimise the risk of airborne DNA contamination, saving scientists time by producing consistent quality DNA from their PCR.

Syngene’s AC600 Series PCR Workstations, which are available as Combination Workstations or Dead Air Boxes (circulation free environment), feature sturdy polycarbonate cabinets with built-in 254 nm UV lighting to irradiate surfaces and tools between PCR amplifications. The Combination Workstations include laminar flow air circulation and integrated ISO 5 HEPA filters to remove airborne contaminants. By preventing any potentially cross-contaminating DNA from being amplified and interfering with the PCR, these workstations help ensure more accurate results, saving scientists the time and effort of re-running their experiments.

Utilising moulded cabinets constructed without seams or joins means AC600 Workstations come fully assembled and pre-tested for use. This pre- validation combined with their ductless design allows AC600 Workstations to be plugged in straight from the box, without the time and expense of an engineer installing them.

Designed with safety in mind, AC600 Workstations have a folding sash for scientists’ protection and are controlled by a microprocessor which automatically regulates air quality (Combination Workstations) and UV dosage to maintain a clean working environment. The cabinet’s polycarbonate and polypropylene design reflects UV radiation, preventing harmful UV escaping, and its leak-proof, chemically resistant base affords easy cleaning and decontamination between PCR set-up.

In a choice of sizes (from 81cm-122cm wide), the AC600 Workstations are suitable for use in most lab spaces and for added flexibility, the HEPA filter supplied with the Combination Workstations can be exchanged for other filters.

“We have been looking for a reliable, easy to install PCR Workstation to help our customers prevent cross-contamination during DNA amplification as it can lead to inaccurate PCR results, costing them valuable time and reagents,” explains Clare Grimsey, Distributor Sales Manager at Syngene. “With the AirClean®

electrophoresis units and NuGenius or G:BOX DNA gel imaging systems will assure scientists get great results with their DNA gels time after time.” More information online: ilmt.co/PL/aAVo

Streamlining Synthetic Organic Methods Development

The DrySyn Spiral Evaporator from Asynt is enabling the Cresswell Group within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath to improve and streamline many aspects of their synthetic organic methods development.

The research activities of the Cresswell Group are focused on new reaction development, and the exploitation of novel or underutilised reactivity, catalysis, or reactive intermediates to solve longstanding problems in organic synthesis. Current major projects are centred on visible light photoredox catalysis and include developing new methods for nucleophilic borylation as well as investigating visible light-mediated alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling and visible light-mediated C(sp3)-H functionalisation reactions.

Dr Alex Cresswell, Head of the Group commented: “My lab is focused on the development and mechanistic understanding of new catalytic methods for organic synthesis. Our recent purchase of the DrySyn Spiral Evaporator from Asynt has been greatly advantageous, as it allows us to vacuum down up to four different samples at a time, streamlining work-up procedures for multiple reactions. It saves so much time, and there is no need to worry about bumping. It removes all of the hassle associated with concentrating samples directly into vials, which you cannot easily attach to equipment such as rotary evaporators. Taking off high- boiling solvents like DMF and DMSO is another big plus. The DrySyn Spiral Evaporator has had heavy use since its arrival in our lab - it is not uncommon for my group to be queuing up to use it!”

The DrySyn Spiral Evaporator is a compact system offering rapid concentration of even high boiling solvents such as DMSO, DMF or water, without the need to heat to high temperatures. Using the DrySyn Spiral Evaporator enables scientists to concentrate or dry samples directly from any tube or vial (up to 24mm neck diameter) in DrySyn reaction vial inserts, up to 4 samples at a time, all within the footprint of a hotplate. Combining the proven safety benefits of DrySyn with patented spiral plug evaporation technology, the DrySyn Spiral Evaporator offers fast and effective parallel evaporation in tubes or vials without solvent bumping thereby eliminating sample cross contamination. Other advantages of the DrySyn Spiral Evaporator include its ease of use, employment of mild conditions for temperature sensitive compounds and efficient recovery of small quantity samples.

New Hot Block for Open-Vessel Digestion Launched

Well-known for its microwave- assisted digestion instruments, Anton Paar has now launched a laboratory hot block for the acid digestion, evaporation, and concentration of samples. Multicube 48 comes with pre-installed and customisable methods and complies with standard methods such as EPA 3010a, 3020b, 3050b, and 3060 for solid waste and EPA 200.2,

200.7, 200.8, 200.9, 245.1, and 365.1 for water. The new hot block combines an easy workflow and operation with Anton Paar precision. High temperature homogeneity of ±1°C over the whole block guarantees the same digestion quality for all samples. The disposable low-cost vials with lowest metal blanks eliminate the risk of external contamination.

The Multicube 48 vials can be used for weighing and digesting, storing digested solutions, and as volumetric flasks for filling up the samples to the appropriate volume. The vials are fully compatible with autosamplers for metal analysis by F-AAS, GF-AAS, ICP-OES, or ICP-MS.

Anton Paar has over 40 years of experience in developing sample preparation instruments and provides a broad portfolio of conventionally heated and microwave- assisted digestion instruments.
