With expansion a prime focus for businesses worldwide, many are looking towards rapidly establishing new regions of growth, particularly in Asia, Pacifi c Rim countries.

The latest business developments from across Asia by Heather Hobbs

This section of International Labmate will especially look at the success of both Asian and European companies with established premises or business partnerships, highlighting the opportunities that exist while realising potential for other companies to move into export markets.

Lödige Strengthens Indian Joint Venture Bectochem Loedige Process Technology

processing systems to date, signifi cantly more than 100 of which were tablet coaters. This has allowed Lödige to enter a regional market which is practically inaccessible in any other way. In return, Bectochem can supply its customers with systems built according to German technological and quality standards.

Gebr. Lödige Maschinenbau GmbH is currently expanding its engineering and production capacities for coating, mixing, granulating and drying as well as the handling units required for this process in India. This represents an expansion of the globally active company’s successful joint venture with the Indian company Bectochem, a leading manufacturer of pharmaceutical process technology.

The Mumbai-based joint venture, Bectochem Loedige Process Technology (BLPT), of which Lödige holds a share of 51%, was established in April 2013. Since then this strategic collaboration has undergone steady further development: The portfolio of BLPT includes machines for the pharmaceutical, food and chemical industry. In total, this collaboration has supplied companies in India and its neighbouring countries with over 300 pharmaceutical

“This kind of model is still rather uncommon for medium- sized German companies,” explained Lödige Director Dr Dirk Sunderer. “But we are confi dent in our decision. That is why we will increasingly integrate engineering and production services from India in our core processes. For instance, some products of our portfolio will be produced entirely by BLPT in the future. We expect this to give us a signifi cant cost advantage over our competitors, especially where price-sensitive products are concerned,” he added.

The decision to strengthen the company’s commitment to India is part of a strategic reorientation: Lödige is currently undergoing a transformation from a conventional machine building company to a provider of integrated process engineering solutions with the aim of becoming a future- proof solution & service provider.

“The development from a mostly production-oriented company to an engineering company requires us to expand our own engineering capacities,” Sunderer said, describing the requirements of this transformation process. “Production services and, in the future, also engineering services will increasingly be purchased both from the domestic and the foreign market, with basic engineering, R&D and our core competencies in the area of production technology remaining at our headquarters in Paderborn, Germany.”

Pfeiffer Vacuum Opens New Plant in Wuxi China

Pfeiffer Vacuum opens new plant in Wuxi China

Pfeiffer Vacuum, one of the world’s leading providers of vacuum solutions, celebrated the expansion of its facility in Wuxi, China on 23 October with a grand opening ceremony. Double its original size, the new, expanded facility marks a signifi cant milestone in Pfeiffer Vacuum’s development in China, as it allows the company to better respond to local customers’ needs while supporting its strategic growth in the local coating and semiconductor market.

DeNovix Receives Japanese Patent for CellDrop™ Automated Cell Counter

DeNovix Inc. announces the award of Japanese Patent No. 6579475 covering their innovation in the fi eld of cell counting. The CellDrop Automated Cell Counter, engineered with DirectPipette™ Technology, is the fi rst image-based cell counter that eliminates the need for slides reducing plastic waste in the laboratory and saving associated costs. As previously announced, the United States Patent and Trademark Offi ce (USPTO) issued Patent No. 10,302,568 relating to the CellDrop in June 2019.

The CellDrop Series features permanent sample surfaces that form a reusable sample chamber. This innovation brings the simple Load, Measure and Wipe Clean functionality of microvolume spectrophotometers to cell counting, making it easier than ever to gain rapid, accurate cell counts and viability measurements. Not only are consumable plastics eliminated, but the instrument also delivers unrivalled levels of performance.

“The Japanese life science market is an important part of our global business,” stated DeNovix CEO Fred Kielhorn. “The market has responded strongly to CellDrop since its launch in early 2019 and the JPO’s issuance of a patent recognising the unique innovations of this product is an important milestone for DeNovix.”

The patent protects the unique, reusable sample surface design as well as the variable volume counting chamber.

This feature enables measurements across the widest range of cell densities—7x10e2 to 2.5x10e7 cells/mL. Samples are easily removed with a dry laboratory wipe after analysis.

“This is part of our new growth strategy which includes a global investment program of 150 million,” said Hugh Kelly, representative of the management board. “In addition to providing after-sales service, the bigger facility will now also allow for the production of dry pumps and our new leak detection systems ATC, as well as the assembly of pumping stations. With the introduction of industry-leading technologies and equipment, Pfeiffer Vacuum is better poised to react to the needs of local customers.”

At the 2019 annual general meeting, Pfeiffer Vacuum shared 8 strategic pillars of the company, with Dr Eric Taberlet, CEO of Pfeiffer Vacuum Technology highlighting the importance of the Chinese market to the company’s development. As one of the key cities in the Yangtze River Delta region, Wuxi has been receiving strong government support to develop its semiconductor, electronics and solar industry. The expanded facility not only strengthens Pfeiffer Vacuum’s presence in China but also enables closer proximity to its customers in China as well as the wider Asia market.

Since entering the China market in 2007, Pfeiffer Vacuum has maintained a steady growth with over 150 employees, largely part of the country’s booming economy as well as strong market demand for scientifi c and high-precision vacuum technology. As the inventor of the turbomolecular pump, Pfeiffer Vacuum has been investing in Research & Development for nearly 130 years, with an aim to provide cutting-edge solutions and innovative products to customers and the wider industry.

In support of the vacuum technology industry in China, Pfeiffer Vacuum has been working closely with top local enterprises, scientifi c research institutions as well as other industry partners with its products and rich expertise. With the new, expanded facility, Pfeiffer Vacuum is set to deliver more value to local customers and deepen its commitment to the China market in the future.
