The SCF2 Microcentrifuge from Stuart fits a versatile set of features into a compact, easy-to- use design. Offering quiet operation, the SCF2 is a variable speed unit accommodating either a fixed angle rotor holding 12 tubes or a strip tube rotor. As well as pelleting of precipitates, applications include processes involving spin column kits for binding/washing, such as sample preparation, sample clean up and sample concentration.

Dr Jayne Bates, Bibby Scientific Technical Support Manager, commented: “In addition to the benefits of versatility and a compact design, the SCF2 Microcentrifuge shows Stuart’s commitment to ensuring laboratory safety. The door remains locked while the rotor is in motion and the SCF2 incorporates BioCote®

protection. This unique

antimicrobial additive is applied during the manufacture of all Stuart benchtop laboratory equipment, dramatically cutting surface contamination for the lifetime of the product. BioCote is a silver-based finish which reduces the risk of infection by disrupting vital cellular processes within all common bacteria and fungi, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens such as MRSA.”

The fixed angle rotor holds up to 12 x 1.5ml or 2.2ml microfuge tubes and, using the supplied adaptors, 0.5ml and 0.2ml tubes can also be centrifuged. The strip tube rotor holds four strips of 8 x 0.2ml tubes. No tools are required to install the rotors and spin speed is variable, up to 13,500rpm for the fixed angle rotor and 6,000rpm for the strip tube rotor. Centrifugation speed can be displayed in rpm or rcf and the timer can be set for run times of between 1 and 30 minutes. A pulse button enables rapid spin-down, with acceleration to the preset rpm followed by immediate deceleration.

Reliable Microplate Mover for Award Winning Perifusion System

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc announced it has been selected by Biorep®

Technologies, Inc to provide the Thermo

Scientific Orbitor RS microplate mover for incorporation into its new Perifusion system. The Orbitor™ RS, launched this year at LabAutomation, has been developed using proven technology from the well-known Thermo Scientific RapidStak and Thermo Scientific Dimension4 product lines. The Orbitor RS, which is now being used as a partner to the Perifusion system, is unmatched in its reliability, flexibility and speed, delivering a plate in as little as four seconds.

The Orbitor RS has exceptional reliability due to its advanced collision and plate sensing technologies that ensure process disruptions are minimised. “Our collaboration with Thermo Fisher Scientific is already proving highly successful. They’ve provided us with easy to implement software tools, which have enabled us to quickly and effortlessly integrate the Orbitor RS with our Perifusion system, making it an ideal lab automation partner product,” said Felipe Echeverri, Head of Engineering at Biorep Technologies.

The Biorep Technologies Perifusion System has proven to be a valuable tool for the in vitro stimulation of pancreatic islets, and subsequent collection of the secretions. As such, the system was recently recognised with the ‘Humanitarian Application of the Year’ award at the National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Awards Ceremony. Selected for its entry titled ‘Bringing Automation to Cell Secretion Analysis,’ the honour recognised the Perifusion System’s significant improvements to throughput and repeatability. This technology can also be readily adapted to different cell types. Among other factors, the Perifusion System can accurately control sample collection for up to 12 channels in parallel, using pre-programmed protocols and requiring several sample trays. It is vitally important for users to efficiently change and move these plates within the system, and the reliability of the Orbitor RS ensures that peace of mind.

New Software Adds Value and Flexibility

to Dual Channel Flame Photometers Sherwood Scientific’s Model 420 and Model 425 Flame Photometers now come with 420 BlueNotes software. This eagerly anticipated product launch not only enables the instruments to perform sample analyses outside the linear response range but also facilitates measurement of all elements simultaneously. Supplied free with all newly-built Model 420 and 425 instruments, the 420 BlueNotes package greatly increases the utility of these dual channel flame photometers. The linear response range of the standalone instrument is extended to multipoint calibration with 420 BlueNotes, enabling analysis of a much wider range of sample concentrations. Another major change is that all elements – Na, K, Li for Model 420 and Na, K, Li, Ca for Model 425 – can be measured at the same time, rather than only two at once. If required, the operator will be able to measure all elements simultaneously via the host computer’s on-screen, real-time display.

Jon Copsey, Sherwood Scientific’s Marketing Manager, commented: ‘420 BlueNotes is an exciting development which adds significant value to our dual channel flame photometers. We have also updated the firmware of both the 420 and 425 for enhanced performance, adding a Clinical 102 Mode which measures Na, K and Li but is designed for the expected higher concentrations of Potassium in urine. The 420 BlueNotes disk includes a demonstration of how the software works with the instrument, helping users gain maximum benefit from the new functionalities.”

420 BlueNotes allows the operator to choose K or Li as an internal standard reference element. The ‘Spot Check’ facility updates a previous multipoint calibration, thus adjusting for any drift (when the internal standard facility is not in use) and allowing previously generated calibrations to be re-used. 420 BlueNotes requires a PC running Windows XP or later (not supplied), and is fully compatible with combinations of newly-supplied dual channel flame photometer, diluter and autosampler. However, the new software is not backward compatible with units already installed.
