Spotlight Clinical, Medical & Diagnostic Products New Turkish IVF Lab Equipped
IKS International has supplied all the sample storage and security equipment at the new BAHCECI Fulya IVF centre in Istanbul following a highly successful joint project with their Turkish distributors Gonagen. The package includes 17 controlled-atmosphere incubators (CO2/O2 and CO2) integrated with IKS’ state- of-the art XiltriX® monitoring, logging and alarm system.
Significant factors in the choice of the IKS triple-gas incubators were exceptional value for money and their very fast recovery times after door opening, providing a very stable environment for vulnerable samples. Equally important, however, was the added value provided by IKS’ expertise in laboratory monitoring and in managing projects to deliver complete laboratory solutions.
The Fulya IVF centre was established by the Bahceci group, a well-known organisation in this field in Turkey and surrounding countries. IKS equipment is also used in other, smaller laboratories in Turkey, Kosovo and Iraq.
Gonagen is a specialised distributor of hospital and medical laboratory equipment and is the sole distributor of IKS branded products in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Kosovo and Iraq. Han Weerdesteyn, IKS Product Manager said: “We are very happy to work with Gonagen to develop equipment and monitoring solutions. Their professional approach to handling projects like this is a formula for future success.”

Regulatory Approval for New Ovarian Cancer Diagnostic Test
A new diagnostic tool, which studies show can aid in determining the risk of whether a pelvic mass is benign or malignant, is now available in Europe. This simple blood test is expected to help in the assessment of epithelial ovarian cancer, the most lethal form of gynecological cancer. This important immunoassay, which will run on Abbott Diagnostics ARCHITECT systems, is the first automated HE4
test.Research has shown that this novel diagnostic marker, combined with other tests such as the CA125 assay, can aid in measuring the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer in pre- and post-menopausal women who have a pelvic mass.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the five-year survival rate of ovarian cancer patients is 46 percent. However, when the disease is diagnosed earlier, the survival rate increases to 94 percent.
"The ability of this test to help physicians predict whether a pelvic mass is benign or malignant is an important development for both patients and physicians," said Brian Blaser, Senior Vice President, Diagnostics, Abbott. "Abbott's ARCHITECT HE4 test will aid physicians in determining the most appropriate treatment for their patients." Abbott partnered with Fujirebio Diagnostics, Inc in the development of the assay. The test is now available in several European countries, as well as in some countries in Asia Pacific and Latin America and recently received FDA clearance in the United States.

Vital Work in Cancer Research
Qlucore has announced that Dr Helena Carén has been using Qlucore Omics Explorer to research tumour growth and treatment whilst at the Department of Clinical Genetics, Institute of Biomedicine, The Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, Gothenburg, Sweden.
The Sahlgrenska Academy is the faculty of health sciences at the University of Gothenburg, where education and research are conducted within the fields of pharmacy, medicine, odontology and health care sciences. Dr Carén has been using the Qlucore software to analyse methylation data from the Illumina platform in order to identify patterns that could help to categorise tumours into different categories of seriousness, and also to predict how the tumour is likely to develop.

Artificial Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) closely matches the electrolyte concentrations and osmolality found in authentic cerebrospinal fluid.
Artificial CSF is commonly used as a sterile diluent or flushing fluid for delivery of molecules into the brain. It can also be used when sampling brain interstitial fluid.
Artificial CSF manufactured by Harvard Apparatus is perfect for use as a general infusate or perfusate, when it is essential for fluid to be identical in composition to native CSF.

"It is often very difficult to find meaningful patterns in very large datasets like these, but Qlucore's software has made it much easier for me to understand the relevance of the data produced during my methylation analysis," said Helena Carén, PhD. "The 3D graphics, in particular, have been very helpful, since it is easier to spot important patterns when you can view your results as a 3D image, and even rotate the image, if needed, directly on the computer screen." The ultimate goal of the methylation study is to identify a set of genes whose methylation profile can accurately determine how aggressive a tumour is, as well as the most effective method of treatment. In the longer term, these studies will also help to identify the specific genes that have contributed to formation of the tumour itself.
Qlucore's highly intuitive Qlucore Omics Explorer application adds increased creativity to this kind of research, thanks to the software's impressive speed and statistical capability. Qlucore Omics Explorer has already gained a global reputation within the scientific community, as it allows the actual researchers – the people with the most biological insight – to study the data and to look for patterns and structures. In addition, because Qlucore Omics Explorer allows researchers to explore different hypotheses and alternative scenarios within seconds, the software is already helping to play a key role in unveiling important new discoveries.
