Malvern Builds Direct Operation in Asia

Mallinckrodt Baker Renamed Following Acquisition

be announced in the near future. Avantor intends to continue using the J.T.Baker product line brand name.

"Our new name conveys several very important ideals," said Raj Gupta, executive chairman at Avantor and senior advisor at New Mountain Capital.

Hisashi Ietsugu, President and CEO of Sysmex Corporation, and Paul Walker, Managing Director of Malvern Instruments, exchanged gifts during the partnership celebration.

At the beginning of October Malvern Instruments marked its expansion into direct sales and applications support for its particle measuring systems in Japan with a celebration held at the company’s offices in Kobe. The move follows the conclusion of an agreement with Sysmex Corporation, which has been distributing Malvern’s systems since 2003. The two companies have also signed an agreement for the Sysmex FPIA particle characterisation instrument to be distributed by Malvern, both in Japan and worldwide.

Guests were addressed by both Paul Walker, Managing Director of Malvern Instruments, and Hisashi Ietsugu, President and CEO of Sysmex Corporation, as well as Jim Fatkin, Malvern’s Regional Manager for Asia.

“With the continued growth and diversification of the Malvern Instruments product range, now is the right time for us to extend our direct operation in Japan and to manage our particle characterisation business through a single organisation, as we do elsewhere,” said Mr Walker. “I am delighted that we have also concluded a new distribution agreement for the Sysmex FPIA systems worldwide and that Malvern and Sysmex will continue to collaborate in developing particle characterisation systems for the bioscience community.”

Hisashi Ietsugu, President and CEO of Sysmex Corporation said: “The transfer of the Malvern and Sysmex industrial particle characterisation business to Malvern Japan is a logical step in the development of our longstanding and successful relationship, in order to exploit synergies between products and markets. At the same time we are happy to have concluded a distribution agreement with Malvern for the Sysmex FPIA instrument, both inside and outside Japan, which we expect will enable us to further build on our success. While we will continue to collaborate in the industrial particle characterisation area, we hope that opportunities will arise for the joint development of exciting new products in the bioscience field.”

Under the terms of the acquisition agreement, the Mallinckrod name will remain with Covidien. Products with this brand name will continue to be manufactured and marketed by Avantor, but will eventually be transitioned to a new brand name which will

"We chose Avantor because of its relevance to leadership. The word 'Avant'-as in avant- garde-evokes the bold ideas, energy, innovation and passion that we have as a company. The word 'Tor' means mountain, and represents our aspiration to achieve new heights of performance and quality as well as our affiliation with New Mountain Capital."

Ron Harding, President of Avantor, emphasised that the company's name is changing, but not its manufacturing process. "This transition will not impact any GMP documentation beyond what might be considered a level one name change," he said.
