49 Animal-free Media Fill Broth Available in Convenient Ready-to-use Bags
Oxoid is pleased to announce that Oxoid Cold Filterable Vegetable Peptone Broth (cfVPB) is now available ready-prepared in low-density Bioprocess Containers (BPCs). Designed specifically for pharmaceutical media fill trials, these ready-to-use bags can simply be connected to your process simulation, eliminating the need for bulk media preparation.
The BPCs are manufactured from a medical grade plastic film that meets USP Class VI requirements and are certified free from animal-derived components. Connection is made through a male or female connector, which is attached to the BPC with C-Flex tubing.
Oxoid cfVPB is also certified free from animal-derived components, making it ideal for production environments in the pharmaceutical industry, where there is a need to control the risk of contamination from animal-derived materials–particularly with the emergence of diseases such as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE).
Formulated using a pea peptone (digested using fungal enzymes), this is a highly nutritious medium that supports the growth of bacteria, yeasts and fungi when incubated under appropriate conditions.
The cfVPB is gamma-irradiated at a dose validated to be lethal for all yeasts, moulds and bacteria, including bacterial spores and mycoplasmas. The BPCs are, likewise, gamma-irradiated. The medium is prepared using water-for- injection–quality water. The BPCs are aseptically filled, ensuring that the prepared medium is suitable for use in pharmaceutical clean room support areas. The product is also accompanied with quality certification providing full traceability for each batch.
Oxoid cfVPB is available as standard in 10 and 20 litre volume BPCs; other sizes are custom-made.

The Regional Molecular Genetics Service (RMGS) at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, is using a Tecan Freedom EVO®
liquid handling workstation in
combination with chemagen’s proven nucleic isolation technology to perform fully automated DNA extraction. Supplied by chemagen’s UK distributor, Auto Q Biosciences, this integrated system is housed within a Class 1 biological safety cabinet and provides walkaway processing of up to 24 samples in a single run.
Kudrat Rahman, Business Development Director at Auto Q Biosciences, explained why the Company chose to work with Tecan: “The RMGS required a robust solution capable of fully automating its DNA extraction process. Although several other manufacturers were able to provide this, the RMGS needed a very reliable system capable of performing the extraction with minimal alteration to its existing protocols. We were aware that Tecan workstations had already been successfully combined with chemagic instruments at other sites across Europe, and Tecan’s open software architecture and excellent reputation for reliability made the Freedom EVO an obvious choice.”
Stuart Bayliss, RMGS Project Manager, added: “The system runs for eight hours a day, five days a week, and is proving to be very reliable. It has certainly exceeded our expectations in terms of efficiency, and is a significant step forward from our previous method. We are currently processing approximately 6,000 whole blood samples a year using the platform, and are now looking into automation of DNA extraction processes for saliva and cell culture samples to further increase our productivity.”
