Image Analysis Reference Standards in Single-Shot Format
Whitehouse Scientific is now offering its image analysis particle sizing reference standards in convenient and easy-to-use, single-shot formats. Packaged in weights suitable for today’s image analysers, these multi-modal standards have shown excellent reproducibility in a recent round-robin exercise involving leading laboratories working with a variety of different image analysis systems.
Sub-sampling of reference standards by users is not recommended because of the possibility of introducing errors and thus deviations from the certified size values. To avoid any need for this, the new set of 10 standards are packaged in weights from 5 to 20 gram. This makes them highly suitable for even the latest generation of image analysis systems, which require only relatively small amounts of sample.
External testing has produced results unsurpassed in any other similar particle sizing round robin. In particular, when the test data from manufacturers of image analysis systems were collated, the eight peak positions in a multimodal standard from 500 - 2000 microns could be superimposed, showing the very close agreement between instruments for these standards.

New Hot Plates and Stirrers
Torrey Pines Scientific, Inc announces its new line of multi-position analogue stirring hot plates and stirrers featuring 5 or 9 stirrers.
The large 12” (30.48cm) square ceramic heater tops have a temperature range to 450°C. The 5-position stirring units can stir 5-800ml beakers, and the 9-position units can stir 9-500ml beakers of aqueous solutions with a stirring range from 100 to 1500rpm.
The units can support more than 50 pounds (22.6kg) on the plate surface, and they are designed to keep spills out of the chassis. All controls are mounted well in front of the heater surface to protect against accidental burns.
The units are available in 100VAC/50Hz, 115VAC/60Hz, 220VAC/60Hz and 230VAC/50Hz. They are fused for safety and are supplied with user’s manual and detachable line cord for the country of use. All units are UL, CSA and CE or equivalent rated.

This premier offering of drug-like screening compounds maintains the superior structural diversity of the Maybridge Screening Collection by using an industry standard clustering algorithm to select a statistically representative sample of the full collection. All compounds fit Lipinski guidelines for ‘drug-likeness’ and have purity greater than 90%. Additionally, they have been selected to be non-reactive, ensuring fewer false positives and higher quality results. The Maybridge HitFinder Collection is also now available ‘off the shelf’ as a 0.25µmol dry film supplied in 384 well microplates, in addition to the original 1µmol 96 shallow well plate format.

Tackling Fungal Food Spoilage
Lab M has added two new products to its expanding portfolio of specialist culture media for the isolation of yeasts and moulds from foodstuffs: Dichloran Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar (ISO) and Dichloran 18% Glycerol Agar (ISO). Importantly, the new media comply fully with the requirements of ISO 21527- 1:2008 and ISO 21527-2:2008 respectively, standards that relate to the enumeration of yeasts and moulds in food and animal feeding stuff. Both products are supplied dehydrated as complete formulations that are ready to prepare without the need for any additional supplementation.
Widespread in nature, yeasts and moulds pose a contamination risk to foodstuffs during processing, packaging and storage. When creating media for their isolation and culture it is essential to balance the growth of selected organisms with a degree of control, in order to prevent overgrowth and enable efficient colony counting. The incorporation of the antifungal agent dichloran in the new media restricts the spreading of mucoraceous fungi and controls the colony size of other genera.
Dichloran Rose Bengal Chloramphenicol Agar (ISO) (DRBC Agar) is designed for the enumeration of viable yeasts and moulds in products with a water activity above 0.95. It is prepared according to ISO 21527-1:2008 and complies with Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) and American Public Health Association (APHA) methods. In addition to glucose, dichloran and the anti-bacterial chloramphenicol, the medium incorporates Rose Bengal, which both helps limit colony size and is selective against bacteria.
Dichloran 18% Glycerol Agar (DG18 Agar) is for the enumeration of viable osmophilic yeasts and xerophilic moulds in food or animal feed products that have a water activity of 0.95 or less. The reduced water activity in this medium is achieved through the addition of glycerol at approximately 18%, the importance being that many yeast and moulds require a low water activity to enhance growth and colony development. Prepared according to ISO 21527-2:2008 DG18 is also and compliant with methods set out in the BAM.
