DialPath Technology Enables Rapid Analysis of Liquids by FTIR Spectroscopy

A2 Technologies has announced its new integrated FTIR analyser designed for the rapid analysis of liquids by FTIR spectroscopy. Based on A2's widely used ML analyser, the high performing FTIR spectrometer that occupies just 8 square inches on a lab bench, the ML with DialPath Technology represents a completely new approach to the analysis of liquid samples.

The DialPath technology features a tumbler-like optical head that can be rotated into position to provide one of three, factory set, selectable sample pathlengths between 30 and 250 microns. To analyse a sample, a drop of the liquid is placed on a stationary infrared-transparent window mounted on the top surface of the analyser, and then a second window is rotated into position, thus sandwiching the sample between the two windows. This creates highly reproducible, fixed sample pathlength between the two windows. The DialPath technology offers the user their choice of three different pathlengths, which are specified when the system is ordered, affording a FTIR liquids analyser with exceptional versatility, ease of use and performance in multi-application environments. For lower concentration samples, simply dial in a longer pathlength window set; for samples that are more concentrated, use the shorter pathlength combination.

The DialPath Technology makes liquids analysis as easy to use as ATR. There is no reason to use traditional demountable liquid cells, which can leak, require spacers, may fringe, are difficult to fill and clean, and are particularly difficult to use with more viscous samples. The DialPath-equipped ML readily accommodates samples with a wide range of viscosities. Cleaning the DialPath analyser is as simple as rotating the window away from the fixed window and wiping the liquid sample off both windows.

Graham Miller, President of A2 Technologies, commented: "The ML with DialPath Technology represents the first breakthrough in liquids

analysis by FTIR in a number of years. ATR has become a mainstay for FTIR analysis because of its ease of use and versatility and now this new technology makes longer pathlength liquids analysis just as easy. The ML with DialPath Technology will find great use among analysts who frequently measure liquid samples in industries as varied as petroleum, energy, chemical and food."

HPLC and LCMS Under One Roof

Shimadzu has introduced its new LabSolutions 5 chromatography software. It unites the complete HPLC family as well as the LCMS-2020 under one roof. The brand-new LC- 30A Nexera UHPLC system has also been integrated within the menus and program sequence of the new software.

The software’s general design and the startup window have been modified. A network-oriented flexible display replaces the previous system. In future versions of the software, it will be possible to select and display only the instruments of interest.

The LCMS-2020 and the complete HPLC family of instruments is now under one roof. At the same time, downward compatibility for previous HPLC systems has been guaranteed. Systems that are no longer actively marketed can be fully integrated.

System administration is now a separate menu item. In addition to settings for data storage, backup and retrieval, it is possible to define parameters in the displays, for instance the number of decimal digits.

In addition to the existing HPLC instrument control functions, complete control of the LC-30A Nexera has been implemented into the software. In this way, overlapping injection and pretreatment autosampler functions are just as accessible as the application of various rinsing fluids.

The data acquisition window is now much more user-friendly. When implementing multiple detectors, users can choose to display only the signals of a specific detector, or all detector signals – the tab structure enables straightforward switching between detectors.

For post-processing of acquired data, advanced options are available. In the reanalysis (post-run) window, the data analysis parameters are now shown under tabs in the standard window, precluding the use of the right mouse button and submenus.

In addition to the functions described, other program components, such as the report, have been modified to simplify operation of the software as well as the associated hardware.

New Near-Infrared Spectrometer Has Spectral Response from 900-2200 nm

Ocean Optics has expanded its offering of small-footprint near- infrared spectrometers with the introduction of NIRQuest512-2.2, a high-performance unit with response from 900-2200 nm. NIRQuest512-2.2 is ideal for applications ranging from moisture detection and chemical analysis to high-resolution laser and optical fibre characterisation.

NIRQuest512-2.2 uses a high-stability, 512-element Hamamatsu Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs)-array detector in a compact optical bench with two-stage thermoelectric cooler and low-noise electronics. Depending on the configuration – a half-dozen grating options and five sizes of optical bench entrance slits are available – optical resolution of ~0.5nm-5.0nm (FWHM) is possible. Higher-resolution setups are especially useful for characterising lasers.

External hardware triggering functions allow users to capture data when an external event occurs, or to trigger an event after data acquisition. This capability can be especially useful for capturing data from automated processes or from devices such as solar simulators that flash synchronously.

The SpectraSuite Operating Software used by the spectrometer is a modular, Java-based spectroscopy platform that operates in Windows, Mac OS and Linux operating systems. In addition, NIRQuest512-2.2 can be bundled with the Remora Network Adapter from Ocean Optics to turn the system into a multi-user spectral data server over Ethernet or your existing Wi-Fi connection.

With the addition of the NIRQuest512-2.2, Ocean Optics now offers NIR spectrometer options with spectral response from 900-1700 nm, 900-2050 nm, 900-2200 nm and 900-2500 nm. Multiple grating, optical bench and accessory options make it possible to configure a NIRQuest system for a variety of applications in medical diagnostics, food and beverage monitoring, pharmaceuticals analysis, environmental monitoring, process control and more.
