Flow Meters Selected for Experimentation
Custom flow meter manufacturer and distributor Litre Meter has supplied Sierra Smart-Trak and Micro-Trak volume flow meters to state of the art research facility, Diamond Light Source for use in ionisation and X-ray experimentation.
Scientists at the facility have selected Micro-Trak™ and Smart-Trak digital mass flow meters to control the flow of gases used for various scientific applications.
The Micro-Trak™ 101 series incorporates new, state-of-the-art sensor technology and a precision-engineered direct acting valve design to measure ultra-low gas flow accurately and reliably. The instrument has been designed to operate at flow ranges under 4 standard cubic centimetres per minute (sccm) with a minimum controllable mass flow rate of 0.1 sccm. It is highly stable and delivers a measurement accuracy of +/- 1.0% full scale and +/- 0.2% repeatability.
Micro-Trak™ has a stainless steel flow path and elastomer seals that eliminate the possibility of leaks. It is suitable for use in most applications involving clean gases, including those that involve corrosive and toxic gases. Smart-Trak and Micro-Trak™ incorporate Sierra’s state-of-the-art Dial-A-Gas®
. Its internal microprocessor is pre-programmed with ten
gases that are commonly used in biotech, pharmaceutical, analytical and research applications – others gases can be substituted to customise the flowmeter for applications. This technology allows the instrument to be used for multiple applications, creating great flexibility as well as helping to reduce spares inventory.

One of the UK’s leading marine consultancy, survey and laboratory testing specialists, Emu Ltd, has embraced QSI’s WinLims Rental solution for laboratories to enhance the accuracy, efficiency and traceability of its laboratory information management procedures to improve the organisation’s microbiology and water quality laboratories’ customer service.
“When samples arrive at the lab we immediately register them on WinLims and then enter all results on completion of testing; WinLims then produces reports to be sent to our clients. The WinLims Rental system helps us with traceability of samples from our laboratory,” explained Christina Scott, Microbiology Lab Manager for Emu Ltd. Scott continued: “We needed the LIMS system to help us develop and expand. We used a paper- based system before and the WinLims system is definitely more efficient. We opted for the rental package due to cost efficiency. We had two or three companies come in to show us their LIMS systems and we didn’t really see any difference between the services or the products being proposed apart from feeling that the QSI seemed the most cost effective. The other companies did not offer a rental option. The cost of licences was a key consideration. Some of the LIMS packages being offered by QSI’s competitors would have required us to buy as many five or ten licences as a minimum which for our current use was too many.” Scott added: “The key benefits of the WinLims system we found were its ease of use as well as the technical support that QSI is able to provide. We would definitely recommend LIMS rental as an option. I am really happy with the system”. WinLims Rental allows an organisation to use a full LIMS for a low monthly fee, with a low up-front cost. The rental agreements are highly tax efficient and can be converted to a subscription contract or full purchase at any time, keeping an organisation’s options open.
