Heather Hobbs NEWS&VIEWS Bringing you the latest Business News and updates from the Science Industry Millipore Expands CRO Services in Europe

Millipore Corporation has moved its European BioPharma Services unit to new, expanded facilities to accommodate strong growth in the biotechnology sector. The new facilities are located in Milton Park, near Didcot in Oxfordshire, England.

Millipore’s BioPharma Services unit is the first global contract research organisation (CRO) dedicated exclusively to large molecule bioanalytical work. The unit arose from Millipore’s acquisition in August, 2009 of BioAnaLab, an Oxford University spin-out, specialising in the analysis of biopharmaceuticals.

The medical faculty of the South Korean Yonsei University and Carl Zeiss celebrated the opening of an Advanced Imaging Centre on April 20. Equipped with Zeiss microscope systems for biomedical research, including the LSM 710 and LSM 700 laser scanning microscopes, the centre will stage international workshops aimed at presenting the latest methods in the field of imaging.

Acquisition Opens up Cytogenetic Testing Arena For PerkinElmer

PerkinElmer has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Signature Genomic Laboratories, LLC, (Spokane, Washington), which specialises in diagnostic cytogenetic testing of chromosome abnormalities in individuals with unexplained physical and developmental disabilities.

“We are delighted to have Signature become part of the PerkinElmer team. Signature brings very strong complementary assets for diagnosing disorders that are often undetected by traditional genetic tests,” said Robert Friel, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PerkinElmer. “Patients, families, researchers and clinicians will benefit from our combined expertise, as accurate diagnosis is crucial to providing answers that lead to better care, treatment and understanding of patients with birth defects, behavioural issues, delay in development or learning problems.”

Founded in 2003 by Lisa G. Shaffer, PhD and Bassem A. Bejjani, MD, Signature Signature’s microarray diagnostic technology is available for both pre-natal and post-natal identification of DNA alterations associated with genetic disease. More recently, Signature launched a suite of services for the diagnosis of patients with leukemia.

“As a global leader in genetic screening technologies and services, PerkinElmer clearly has the resources and worldwide presence to enable our combined testing services to reach more patients and families,” said Dr Shaffer, President and CEO, Signature. “We believe that this move will not only benefit patient populations around the world, but help us continue our success in genetic diagnostic innovation.”

Dionex Corporation has announced a permanent academic endowment at The University of Texas at Arlington that will benefit the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in College of Science. The endowment will set up The Hamish Small Chair of Ion Analysis to honour Hamish Small, the inventor of suppressed ion chromatography.

Employed as a purification technique starting late in the 19th century, the use of ion exchange as an analytical technique for inorganic chemicals was limited by the difficulty of detecting ions in a highly conductive background. Hamish Small developed an ionic suppressor that enabled direct detection of charged species with a conductivity detector. This eventually led to the establishment of Dionex Corporation, recognised as a market leader in IC instrumentation.

Hamish Small

“Hamish Small is one of the giants of modern analytical chemistry,” said Christopher Pohl, Senior Vice President of R&D and Chief Science Officer at Dionex Corporation. “His contributions to analytical chemistry are numerous, including: Indirect Photometric Detection, Hydrodynamic Chromatography, and Ion Chromatography. We at Dionex, wanted to honour his many contributions to analytical chemistry by permanently endowing a chair, named in his honour, and feel that the University of Texas at Arlington is a perfect setting for such an honour.”

It is the intent of Dionex Corporation to give a total of USD 500,000 to the endowment by 2014.
