Dear reader,
Wrong! – This time last year I didn’t expect to see the laboratory/analytical trade falling into a deep depression. Personally, I felt that come September, the worst was over. Not so! Business was there but many, including publishers were feeling the pinch. When business is slow – you cut the advertising and sales promotion budgets – rightly or wrongly – the latter is the obvious observation of a publisher! The item that really hurt was CASH FLOW. It’s alright to appear to make a profit on paper, but if your customers don’t pay on commercial terms you have a problem.
Michael Pattison, Publisher
In our industry and talking to other publishers some of the most important advertisers put up the shutters and simply did not pay on time.
The old saying money makes the world go round has never been more true. If banks don’t lend, purchasers don’t pay, and we have a credit crunch.
As a company you may see less pagination in our journals, perhaps a slightly lighter paper (less postage), but you will not see redundancies. Indeed it may well be the opposite – our journals in the past couple of months have held up well – our books division has taken a strong step forward with many more books commissioned and our exhibitions group has moved forward – new titles from the books division include: “Introduction to Modern Liquid Chromatography”, “Chromatography of Aroma Compounds and Fragrances”, “Ion-Pair Chromatography and Related Techniques”, “Advances in Chromatography Volume 48”, “Basic Gas Chromatography”, “Chromatography: Concepts and Contrasts”, “Nanochromatography and Nanocapillary Electrophoresis”.
If you would like to have a book published we would be delighted to talk with you and I believe that our incentives and rewards for authors are exceptional. The readership from our publications would indicate a potential audience of several hundred thousand.
This Guide, originally published in 1976, is read for its technical articles and referenced probably for far more than its theoretical 12 months lifetime. If as a supplier you are not included then please contact us we wish to be as comprehensive as possible. You will not be disappointed with the exposure as in addition to normal circulation, the Guide is distributed free of charge to visitors of the major and some minor specialist exhibitions and conferences.
I would like to thank both our readers and advertisers for their continued support.
