New System Enables Testing at Body Temperature BioBox meets the growing trend of testing actual medical devices and biomaterials at body
Within the medical device industry, regulatory agencies often test internally-based devices and implants in a physiological state. The lnstron® temperature (37°c).
The BioBox can be ordered as a standard item on new Instron Series 3340, 5540 or 5940 single-column testing instruments or retrofitted on selected models already in operation. The large dimensions of the BioBox allow the full range of movement of the relevant testing system to be used. Typical applications are testing of sutures, catheter tubing, latex gloves, and a wide variety of other devices and biomaterials at physiologically relevant temperatures.
The BioBox testing chamber consists of four polycarbonate sidewalls with an internal heating tube that provides the appropriate levels of heat. The centrally located, high-level air ducts provide consistent airflow for uniform temperature distribution during testing. The adjustable temperature range is from ambient temperature to 40°C, with a deviation from the set temperature of only +/- 2°C.
Two large glass doors arranged one above the other at the front of the enclosure allows for quick access to the test space. For short travel tests the operator only needs to open the lower door to insert and remove the test specimen and preserve the temperature. Although the BioBox fully encloses the test frame, the operating panel and the emergency stop button are ergonomically and conveniently located outside the box.
Typical applications include tensile testing catheter tubes. An example for a set-up, which is optimised for such tasks, includes the BioBox with an Instron®

electromechanical testing instrument with a nominal force capacity of 1 kN and a test space height of 1123mm, equipped with a 100 N load cell.
For measuring the tensile strength of catheter tubing the machine will be equipped with pneumatic grips with a nominal load capacity of 1 kN, which are also suited to tensile testing of cord and yarns.
These grips are designed to prevent specimen slippage and reduce the clamping stress applied to the specimen to avoid failure in the jaw area. Instron’s Bluehill®

New Expanding Storage Box Provides Innovative Solution for Cryogenic Samples
Heathrow Scientific, a leading manufacturer of lab supplies and instruments, introduced its new Work2Store™ expanding storage box at the 2013 Pittsburgh Conference in Philadelphia, PA.
The Work2Store™ box is an innovative solution for more efficient handling and storage of cryogenic samples. It features a patent-pending open/close mechanism that allows the rack to be expanded during use. The resulting space between tube rows provides additional room for manipulation of samples, eliminating the need for researchers to transfer microcentrifuge tubes and cryogenic vials from storage racks to their working area and back.
“As a former lab tech, I am very aware of how much time in a laboratory is spent simply getting samples ready for testing,” said Tim Driscoll, Product Manager for the Work2Store™ rack. “This rack was designed to give laboratory scientists enough working room to open flip top tubes and titrate into samples without having to move dozens of tubes to the benchtop and then move those same tubes back again to a storage rack once work is complete.”
The rack collapses down to a 5 ¼“ x 5 ¼“ (133 x 133mm) size and is specifically designed to fit standard 2“ (52mm) freezer racking. When open, the rack extends a full foot (310 mm) in width. A cryogenic vial lock in each well facilitates one-handed tube opening. A clear lid holds the rack together during transport and storage.
“We have received a very enthusiastic response to this product, both because it solves a real problem and because there’s just nothing else like it on the market,” said Jamie Devin, Managing Director for Heathrow Scientific. “Customers immediately see the value of having just one rack for both bench-top work and freezer storage.”
MORE INFO. 169 QR Code Helps Customers Change Cartridges with Innovative Video
Purite has enhanced customer service yet further by launching an innovative but simple to use QR code system that links users to a range of video tutorials on how to replace used water purification cartridges. By scanning a unique QR code on the packaging of replacement pre-treatment and deioniser cartridges the user is directed to a video that shows a step-by-step process for correctly replacing the used cartridge with a new one. Purite is the first purification system manufacturer to introduce this technology to the market, offering a unique advantage to its customers.
“Using video to directly help our customers is something we are extremely excited about.” said Steve Mines, Sales manager at Purite.“By utilising the power of the smart phone, the QR code and the online video, we are giving our customers 24/7 access to a step-by-step process that will help them save time and boost efficiency.”
Purite recommends that iPhone users download the ‘QR Reader for iPhone’ app, which works across all iPhones and iPod touch models. For Android users, there’s ‘QR Droid’, which was recently voted ‘5 out of 5 stars’ by PC World and Android magazine and has been downloaded well over 10 million times. Both these apps can be downloaded for free on the app store or Google Play store. You can watch all of Purite’s latest videos on the company’s youtube page.
