Mass Spectrometry & Spectroscopy 19 Launch of New XRF Analysis Software
PANalytical is set to launch its new software for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) systems. PANalytical developed Stratos, a brand new software package, for both the Epsilon 3 and Axios spectrometer ranges. The company will also be releasing an upgrade of the FingerPrint software for the Epsilon 3 range. The Stratos XRF analysis software features built-in intelligence and can quickly and accurately analyse the thickness and composition of coatings, surface layers and layered structures. Multi-layer samples can be analysed with bulk standards, without the need for in-type standards that are sometimes hard to source. Another significant advantage of the software is its flexibility and the ease of use provided by the 'Virtual Analyst'. This unique tool is a consultant for advanced method development and provides optimum measurement settings for analysis, which can be time-consuming for complex stack structures. Stratos is able to analyse more than 16 layers, depending on their thickness and composition. It is also easily combined with PANalytical’s Omnian semi-quantitative software. The Stratos software developed by PANalytical makes daily operation easier, with a simple interface that helps new users. Stratos is available for both the Epsilon 3 range (energy dispersive, EDXRF) and the Axios range (wavelength dispersive, WDXRF). Applications of Stratos include the automotive industry, wafers and solar cells and the coating and packaging industry.
FingerPrint software is the second generation of PANalytical’s successful material identification software for the benchtop Epsilon 3 range of spectrometers. The unique combination of FingerPrint software with Epsilon 3 sets new standards for industrial and process control applications. The upgraded FingerPrint software makes it even easier for material testing where the actual composition is not of interest and analysis speed is important. The addition of simple pass/fail reporting means that expert knowledge is no longer required to interpret the results and application of PCA (principal components analysis) allows cluster analysis in 3D visualisation. FingerPrint software is used in materials identification, comparison and quality control and can be used in a wide range of applications, for example in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and petrochemical industries.
MORE INFO. 52 New High-Throughput Spectrometers from Ocean Optics
Ocean Optics has expanded its Elite Series of high-performance modular spectrometers with the introduction of the Ventana line of high throughput spectrometers. Ventana spectrometers combine an optical bench configuration with very high collection efficiency and a high-efficiency volume phase holographic (VPH) grating to provide unprecedented throughput and sensitivity for low light level applications.
Three preconfigured Ventana spectrometers are available: 532nm and 785nm excitation wavelength Raman models, and a visible to near-IR model for general purpose fluorescence applications.
With its high sensitivity performance and compact size, Ventana is ideal for academic and corporate research, OEMs and system integrators seeking a cost- effective alternative to traditional integrated systems. It is well suited for applications in life sciences, pharmaceuticals, materials analysis and more.
The 785nm Ventana system has a spectral range of 250-2000 cm-1 and resolution of 10 cm-1; the 532 nm version covers 35-4300 cm-1 with 20 cm-1 resolution. The VIS-NIR Ventana spectrometer is configured for fluorescence measurements from 430-1100nm with a resolution of 4.0nm (FWHM). Also, the 785nm Raman Ventana spectrometer can be configured with an integrated laser with free space collection optics for the highest throughput possible. Additionally, complete Raman sampling systems including laser, probe and software are available.
MORE INFO. 53 ADVERTORIAL Genova Nano – Jenway’s New Micro-Volume Spectrophotometer
Jenway launches the highly versatile Genova Nano, a 3-in-1 life science, standard and micro-volume spectrophotometer. With all the same features and benefits of the Genova Plus life science instrument, Genova Nano includes a micro-volume accessory for highly accurate measurement of DNA, RNA and protein in sample volumes as low as 0.5µl.
The ability to measure very small volumes makes Genova Nano the perfect analysis tool for measuring the purity and concentration of biological samples. With such small volumes there is minimal sample loss – a significant advantage for DNA researchers and other labs where there is limited availability of sample.
The Genova Nano is simple and quick to use, producing highly accurate and reproducible results in under than 6.5 seconds. It allows nucleic acid concentrations as low as 2ng/µl to be detected. Working with micro-volumes of 0.5µl to 5µl eliminates the need to make dilutions and use cuvettes. A small aliquot is simply placed on the stainless steel read head using a pipette. After measurement, wiping the read head surfaces with a lint-free cloth removes all traces of the sample, allowing fast changeover between samples and increased sample throughput.
Like the Genova Plus, the Genova Nano has pre-programmed methods for the measurement of ssDNA, dsDNA, RNA and oligonucleotide concentrations, as well as Bradford, Lowry, Biuret, BCA and Direct UV methods for protein analysis. In addition to dedicated life science measurement modes, this versatile instrument can also be used as a standard spectrophotometer with measurement modes for photometrics, concentration, multi-wavelength, spectrum scanning, quantitation and kinetics.

A large graphical display is built into the lid of the unit and the icon-driven software with soft-key navigation is intuitive and simple to use. The large internal memory can store over 300 methods, while methods and results can also be saved to a USB memory stick. Like the rest of the 73 series, the Genova Nano has an optional printer which fits into the top of the spectrophotometer, minimising the bench space required and enabling the production of instant results. The Genova Nano also offers the flexibility to use the full range of 73 series accessories. The instrument’s 3-year warranty includes the xenon lamp.
