Expanded Range of Analyses Services Offered for Extractables and Leachables

Target-Enrichment Product Portfolio Expanded

Agilent Technologies Inc have expanded its portfolio of target-enrichment products with the introduction of HaloPlex exome kits and SureCall software. The new additions are designed to complement Agilent’s Web-based SureDesign and custom HaloPlex gene panels to provide a complete, integrated workflow.

“These products simplify the sequencing of clinical research samples,” said Olle Ericsson, Agilent Director of Marketing for DNA sequencing. “The HaloPlex Exome delivers streamlined capture of all coding exons, with low input sample requirements, on all Illumina sequencing platforms. Together with SureDesign, and the SureCall software, these products constitute a very comprehensive clinical research solution for target enrichment.”

The HaloPlex exome kit comprises about 2.5 million probes to provide efficient and comprehensive coverage of the coding regions of the human genome with minimal hands-on time and requires only 200 ng of input DNA.

“The HaloPlex exome provides an easy workflow for all-exon analysis enabling short turnaround sequencing with low DNA input amounts,” said Dr Wilfred van IJcken, Assistant Professor at Erasmus MC and an early access user.

Schott AG has experienced a strong demand for laboratory services related to so-called ‘extractables and leachables’ and therefore continued to expand this range of analyses offered to its customers.

Extractables and leachables are substances, which can be dissolved and released from the constituent parts – glass, metals, rubber, lubricants and adhesives– of the packaging materials that form the container system. To determine any possible interactions with the drugs and exclude them, pharmacists are obliged to perform extensive studies. This procedure is mainly intended for the protection of patients. “Through our extended service offering, we are now able to support pharmaceutical even more efficiently in the assessment of risks,” said Dr Uwe Rothhaar, Director of Schott pharma services division.

By strengthening the ‘Extractables & Leachables’ range of analyses, Schott pharma services underlines its position as an experienced partner for pharmacists who benefit not only from Schott’s decades of expertise but also from a combination of laboratory services, which is unique in the market.

Since the Schott group started to produce pharmaceutical containers made of glass and also commenced to manufacture pharmaceutical packagings such as ampoules, vials, cartridges and syringes, the Company has built up comprehensive product and process know-how. Schott maintains a basic research centre for glass by itself. This know- how and these professional skills have been pooled in the Schott pharma services division and have also been available to enterprises outside the group.

“An increasing number of drug manufacturers ask us to test their outer packages. The spectrum ranges from the analysis of interactions between drug and packaging materials to fracture and strength tests”, stated Rothhaar. His team offers a wide range of analytical services based on the modern instruments of a laboratory whose state of the art is ensured by continuous investments of Schott. In addition, the resources of the central Research and Technology Development division of Schott can be called on as well. The entire laboratory as well as all lab operations and processes are accredited to DIN EN ISO 17025 and thus guarantee highest quality standards.

MORE INFO. 130 : Temperature Control Made Easy

Users in the lab get the right temperature with a simple touch. This ensures the new Pilot ONE touchscreen controller, now standard on Huber systems. Many temperature control tasks in the research laboratory, material testing or in the process industry are now easy to handle with the new multitouch controller.

The newly developed Pilot ONE touchscreen controller is fitted as standard on the range of temperature control equipment. The controller is a further milestone in the history of Huber’s innovative temperature control systems. It fits all Unistats, Unichillers and heating/cooling circulators. Thanks to the unique Plug & Play technology, the introduction of the Pilot ONE allows easy expansion of functions and features. The controller is also backwards compatible to previous models, therefore existing machines can be easily and economically upgraded.

The Pilot ONE offers the latest touchscreen technology, it provides comfortable navigation and advanced control technology. Ease of use is facilitated with USB/LAN connections and full text menu guidance in 11 languages. This not only facilitates operation but has also benefits for data recording or remote control. For example, temperature measurement data can be easily stored on a USB stick. The USB connection also allows a connection to a PC or notebook. Requirements such as remote control or data transmission can be performed easily and in a cost-effective manner in conjunction with the Huber Spy Software. The Ethernet port additionally provides connection to LAN networks, wherein the data communication can occur directly via existing networks without any additional cable. The Pilot ONE can be easily removed to enable usage as a remote control.

The newly designed user interface and the large 5.7" TFT touchscreen makes daily work on the system easier and time- saving. Simple menu icons and easy to use functions such as graphic temperature curves, wipe gesture control, technology glossary and an adjustable favourites menu allow particularly simple operation. For example, the main screen can be switched to an alternative view by only swiping with a finger, e. g. for a large display of the temperature values. Another advantage on Huber devices is the well-proven E-grade concept that allows the activation of additional device functions using optional upgrade packages. This allows the devices to adapt to changing application requirements.
