Laboratory Products 31 Prize Draw Winner Uses Thermal Cycler to Advance Cystic Fibrosis Pathogen Research
Dr Matthew Robinson, a Life and Environmental Sciences Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, UK, has won the Techne prize draw for a free 3Prime personal thermal cycler, worth over £2000. Dr Robinson, a keen amateur photographer, works under lead P.I. Dr Alan Brown. Their research team is part of a much larger bacterial pathogenesis group focusing on a variety of medically important bacterial species. Research is currently being untaken into the two-component sensory systems of Burkholderia cenocepacia, an opportunistic bacterial pathogen that infects the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients. The 3Prime Thermal cycler will be used in experiments to further our understanding of how bacterial sensory systems relate to the virulence, niche adaptation and antibiotic resistance of pathogenic micro-organisms.
“The 3Prime is a great personal thermal cycler that allows me to run routine amplifications quickly and efficiently,” said Matthew Robinson. “Set-up is relatively quick with the option to automatically pre-set a number of standard stages in my reaction protocol, minimising the time needed to input new assays. Its small size means it sits neatly on the side of my bench and doesn’t take over the workspace. In all, a great personal thermal cycler.”
Techne’s extensive Prime range of thermal cyclers provides rapid, effective PCR solutions for laboratories of all sizes. The series includes personal, mid- size, full size and high-throughput networkable models, ranging in capacity from 18 wells to 1536 samples. All models are supported by a market leading four year warranty.
MORE INFO. 103 Balance Provides Precision Weighing in a Rugged Design
The PGL series of balances from Adam Equipment withstands the rigors of a laboratory or field setting while delivering precise results quickly and easily. With all the valuable features of a precision balance and convenient portability, PGL balances come in three pan sizes suited for small to large weighing tasks.
The PGL family consists of 12 models. Small pan PGL balances offer (145 x 125mm) capacities of 200g-300g and a readability of 0.001g. The medium-pan models (192 x 192mm) have capacities of 2000g-15kg and readabilities of 0.01g -0.1g. With capacities of 10kg-30kg and a readability of 0.1kg, large-pan PGLs (400 x 300mm) are ideal for weighing bigger samples.
All PGLs feature Adam’s ShockProtect© overload protection to help prevent damage to internal components that could occur from placing excessive weight on the pan. The balances are equipped with up to 12 weighing units and have application modes for parts counting, percentage weighing, specific gravity/density determination and checkweighing.
An all-metal casing and stainless steel pan make the PGL simple to clean. The easy-to-read backlit LCD displays date and time, while an RS-232 interface facilitates data communication. Power is provided by a standard AC adapter and rechargeable battery pack.

New Recirculating Coolers by Julabo Compact and Economic Cooling
Superior Temperature Technology for a Better Life
A Masterpiece of Technology
The new product family by Julabo offers space-saving and eco-friendly recirculating coolers for simple cooling applications from -10 °C to +40 °C.
The F series of Compact-Recirculating coolers by Julabo are ideal for simple cooling tasks in laboratories and industry. The smallest recirculating cooler of this new family – the F250 – was technically up-graded to provide a wider temperature range from -10°C to +40°C. The new recirculating coolers F500 and F1000 feature even higher cooling capacities and stronger integrated pumps. The F500 pump delivers 24 l/min at 0.5 bar, the stronger F1000 pump delivers 23 l/min at 1.0 bar.
All units of the F series feature impressive product benefits. Set points are easily entered via a 3-key-control panel. Temperatures are easy to read from a distance on the large, bright LED display. The PID temperature control guarantees a temperature stability ±0.5°C. The filling port for the bath fluid is on the top and easily accessible. The integrated display shows the fluid level at a glance. The compact, space-saving design permits flexible positioning on or below laboratory tables benches. Like every Julabo instrument, the sides of recirculating coolers have no venting slits and permit placement right next to each other or other laboratory units.
Thanks to their efficient, energy-saving operation, the compact recirculating coolers of the F series are ideal to replace cooling water. And the price is right making the purchase of a Julabo F series recirculating cooler a cost-efficient investment.
